10 Things You Need to Know About Apple’s New iPhones

Another year, another iPhone. Just in case you missed it, Apple unveiled its highly-anticipated trio of new iPhones on Tuesday. The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature a number of exciting elements such as the powerful new A13 Bionic processor, cutting-edge dual and triple camera systems, the longest battery life ever on an iPhone, and so much more. But sometimes sifting through all the specs can get a little confusing. So here it is, 10 of your most pressing iPhone questions answered below.

1. How much is it?

The iPhone 11 (which is also the newest entry-level iPhone), iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max start at HK$5,999, HK$8,599 and HK$9,499 respectively.

2. When can I buy it?

Pre-orders for the iPhones start tonight (Friday, 13th September) at 8:00pm Hong Kong time. They will be available in stores the following week on Friday, 20th September.

[caption id="attachment_164242" align="alignnone" width="1586"] The iPhone 11 colours | Image courtesy of Apple[/caption]

3. What colour does it come in?

The iPhone 11 comes in colour pops of white, black, green, yellow, purple, and (PRODUCT)Red which contributes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max come in a gorgeous metallic Midnight Green, frosty Silver, slick Space Gray and a rosy Gold.

4. How about the design?

Designed in glass and aluminium, the iPhone 11's back is sculpted from a single sheet of glass which is said to be the toughest glass yet. It is also water resistant to a depth of 2 metres for up to 30 minutes. While both Pro models utilise a textured matte glass, again with the toughest yet, and a polished stainless steel design. Both are water resistant to a depth of 4 metres for up to 30 minutes. All new iPhones are splash, water, and dust resistant as well.

[caption id="attachment_164243" align="alignnone" width="1586"] The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max colours | Image courtesy of Apple[/caption]

5. What does the new A13 Bionic chip do?

Apple have deemed the new chip the "fastest CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) in a smartphone." It has enhanced machine learning and a neural engine which makes it capable of one trillion operations per second. What this effectively means is that it is 20% faster than the previous iPhone X models, i.e. faster graphics and app loading. It will also have a better sense of its location in 3D space and have 30% faster Face ID while supporting different angles for unlocking. The new chip is also more power-efficient -- high efficiency and low power -- which basically saves battery life.

6. Will it take better photos and videos?

The simple answer is yes. But to break it down: the iPhone 11 has a dual lens system consisting of a wide and ultra wide angle lens for a 120-degree field of view, which is fantastic for landscape shots. The extra frame can actually be seen when taking the photo, so you can quickly switch to ultra wide angle when needed.

On the other hand, the Pro models have a triple lens system with the same wide and ultra wide angle, but with the addition of a telephoto lens for a narrow field of view and magnified image. It also has an impressive 4x optical zoom range. Both are ideal for filmmakers and content creators thanks to the camera's 4K recording capabilities, extended dynamic range, and cinematic video stabilisation. You can also record video quicker by holding the capture button and sliding left so you don't miss any fleeting moments.

All the new iPhones have an improved 12-megapixel front-facing "TrueDepth" camera which makes wider group shots or we-fies that much easier. It also has something called "Deep Fusion", which is a new image processing system that optimises the details, pixel-by-pixel, to show noise and texture in the photo. At the same time, Smart HDR (high-dynamic-range) captures all the fine points of shadows and highlights. On top of all of that, an automatic night mode will turn on when it's too dark and brighten up the whole scene.

[caption id="attachment_164244" align="alignnone" width="1586"] You can see the wide screen angle outside of the shot | Image courtesy of Apple[/caption]

7. Does audio sound good?

All iPhone 11 models will support spatial audio, which refers to a full sphere surround-sound technique which mimics the way we hear in real life.

8. What happened to 3D Touch?

Apple has ditched 3D Touch for Haptic Touch for all the models in the iPhone 11 series, which means it goes back to the long press rather than using pressure sensitivity. On the website, Apple says "Haptic Touch lets you do things faster, like take selfies without launching the Camera app."

[caption id="attachment_164245" align="alignnone" width="1517"] The difference between night mode on and off | Image courtesy of Apple[/caption]

9. Do images and video look good on screen?

The iPhone 11 features an all-screen 6.1 inch liquid retina LCD display, wide colour and True Tone visuals which allows a very natural full-screen experience.

As for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, Apple claims they have the "brightest display" ever seen on the iPhone. They will also have full-screens with incredibly vibrant displays that hold a 5.8 inch and 6.5 inch OLED Super Retina XDR display respectively. Both support the same wide colour and True Tone displays too, while HDR display means photos and videos can be viewed in high-definition too.

10. What's the battery life like?

All the new iPhones have improved battery performance. The iPhone 11 will last one hour longer than its predecessor, the iPhone XR, while the iPhone 11 Pro will have four more hours than the iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max has five more hours than iPhone XS Max. The Pro models will also be bundled with a fast charging 18 watt power adapter, which will get a 50% charge in just half an hour.

A Tour of Soho House Hong Kong with Founder Nick Jones

Soho House Founder Nick Jones

Almost 25 years ago, a young Nick Jones founded his first Soho House in London with a compelling proposition: a private members’ club that would be a home away from home for a community of like-minded people, often with a creative leaning.

Since starting the journey in 1995, Soho House has gradually expanded to a current grand total of 25 Houses across the UK, Europe, North America and Asia. Simultaneously Jones has built an impressive portfolio of restaurants, screening rooms, spas, workspaces and hotels. The latest to open: the much-anticipated Soho House Hong Kong.

This month, Jones is inaugurating the space, set in a 28-storey skyscraper in Sheung Wan, with epic views over the city skyline, Victoria Harbour and green swathes of The Peak. “We’re all nervously excited,” he says. “It’s getting there, it’s been a process.”

The Hong Kong Soho House he says, has been a project 10 years in the making, so why did it take so long? “Initially it was focus, then it was trying to find the right partner and the right space and the right lease that goes with it. Everyone gets quite short leases in Hong Kong. You do it all up and then have to take it all down -- so there were some delays. What we have now, it’s been worth the wait.”

[gallery ids="162940,162939,162938"]

What the new House has is a warmly lit Brasserie with old-world charm and dark leather chairs. There’s also a three-floor gym and great drinking and dining, along with the event spaces, a stage and music venue and a screening room. In a bid to become “a cultural and creative focal point within the city”, an events programme under development includes fashion, film, music, art, design and wellness.

The Hong Kong House, which opens hot on the tail of a new Soho House in Mumbai, is the first in East Asia. Was this part of the world always part of Jones’s grand plans?

“Without Asia as part of our network or community, it would be lacking, so I think yes, Asia was always part of the plan,” he says. “We obviously want to see how things go in Hong Kong, but Shanghai is very much part of our list, Tokyo too, as are many other cities in Asia.”

Jones hopes that the region will take to his concept, which has proved so popular in Europe (Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin) and the US (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles). His empire is growing: “We have Paris to come, Rome, Milan and Lisbon -- we have a really interesting pipeline in Europe, a nice pipeline in the Americas. Asia is definitely an area where we want to be much more active.”

“What people want is the global-ness of the club. You join one and you get access to all of them,” he says. It all fits neatly into the new lifestyles of the creative elite: nomadic for work and for pleasure. Whether fashionistas, music producers, artists or entrepreneurs there’s constant travel, and building a community this way is partly what makes a multi-continental club like Soho House so appealing. He’s also built brands such the Cowshed spa and beauty products line, and the homeware range Soho Home.

But with an ever-expanding portfolio of spaces, how does Jones keep things intimate and relevant – in line with this original ethos of being a home away from home? “I think within the clubs we’re always evolving -- and luckily all our members are at the forefront of anything creative, so they help us move in the right direction.”

As each Soho House is designed as a local club within a global network, Jones is quick to point out that Soho House isn’t coming into Asia as a London club. The key person it wants to please is the local member: “It means we have to adjust culturally to the area and the location, and we do this in each city, as the cultures are very different,” he says.

“I’d like to think that in some way, we’re helping to build a global community that’s in every major city. We’re also doing more and more experiences and resorts, and we’ve been lucky there’s a certain sort of person that likes the way we do things.”

[gallery ids="162941,162943,162944"]

Although Hong Kong is best known as an Asian financial capital, Jones has been watching the development of the arts and creative scene with curious fascination since his first visit.

“In the 10 years that I’ve been coming here, I’ve definitely seen that change. You see the people who’ve applied for membership and the people on our committee -- many of them have that creative soul and a like-mindedness about them, which very much fits into Soho House."

“We’re obviously aware that the city is a centre for business and finance, but also aware that it’s one of the creative hubs of Asia. I think it’s progressive and moving quickly,” he adds.

To reflect this, the permanent art collection curated by Kate Bryan, Soho House’s head of collections, focuses entirely on artists born or based in Hong Kong. This is a comprehensive and timely celebration of the local art scene, which has flourished since the arrival of Art Basel, Tai Kwun and M+. The collection features more than 100 works by the likes of Lee Kit, Tsang Kin-Wah or Firenze Lai, as well as work by historic figures such as Ho Fan, Yau Leung, Wong Wo-Bik and Choi Yan-Chi.

And amid a wave of more minimalist interiors being built around the city, Soho House Hong Kong interiors embrace more retro and old-world glamour, designed by an in-house team that’s referenced famous local films and the work of directors such as Wong Kar-Wai. Patterns, colour palettes, furnishings and fabrics echo jewel tones and the city’s rich landscape, but are mixed with design elements from other Houses around the world. Menus will include the locally inspired (siu mai and dim sum) as well as introducing House favourites such as brick chicken and the Dirty Burger. An elaborate, petite indoor pool sits snug on one floor -- more for lounging beside with cocktail in hand than doing laps.

Jones’s members are very vocal about the direction in which they like the Houses to go. There’s a symbiosis there -- a natural process in which members feed the ideas to the House and vice versa. In Hong Kong, where identity, politics and creativity are clashing and evolving at unprecedented pace and intensity, that might be extra critical for the club.

“Hong Kong is a big city but it’s also a village,” says Jones. “There’s such an evolution on the creative scene here, there’s a lot of young interesting creative people, locals who haven’t been provided a place where they can work, hang out, have fun, watch movies, meet. I hope we’re finding lots of these people and that lots more will appear.”

Van Cleef & Arpel’s L’École School of Jewellery Opens First International Campus in K11

L'École, School of Jewellery Arts, has announced that it is opening a permanent campus in Hong Kong this Autumn. The Paris-based institution was first set up in 2012, and is the only school of its kind that offers hands-on courses in the art of jewellery design that cuts across age groups and backgrounds.
The school has conducted successful travelling editions in the past, landing in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Dubai and New York since 2013. Now, after frequent engagements with the student community abroad, L'École has decided to open its first overseas outpost in Hong Kong. The campus will be located at K11 Musea, the new luxury experiential retail, art and cultural destination in Tsim Sha Tsui.

“L'École, School of Jewellery Arts, and K11 Musea share the values of transmission and the commitment to promoting the public education of art, and it therefore felt natural and relevant to have this be our home in Asia. This expansion is perfectly aligned with Hong Kong’s development as a leading arts and culture hub in Asia too. With our ideal location in the city, we look forward to welcoming many more students from all over Asia Pacific,” says Élise Gonnet-Pon, Managing Director of L'École Asia Pacific, School of Jewellery Arts.

[gallery size="full" ids="157794,157793,157796,157795"]

The Asia Pacific campus, once complete, comprises two levels of intimate classrooms, workshops, exhibition spaces and a specialised library with over 600 titles on jewellery art and design. The school will also introduce 17 different course topics under three main themes of Savoir Faire, Art History of Jewellery and the Universe of Gemstones, to start with. Each of these courses will stretch from two to four hours and the number of students admitted per course is capped at 12 to enhance interaction in class.

The international faculty will include experts, passionate jewellers, designers, jewellery historians, gemologists and more. The school will also launch a one-year full-time programme offering modules such as Workshops for Young People, Evening Conversations, and for the first time in Hong Kong curated jewellery exhibitions featuring private collections as well as works by noteworthy contemporary artists.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Luxury Sicilian Villa Can Be Yours for HK$57.1 Million

Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana are selling more than fashion these days. The duo's Sicilian seafront villa is now up for sale for the eye-popping price of HK$57.1 million (US$7.3 million). The electric and bold glamour of the iconic Italian brand is seen throughout this luxurious property; located on the island of Stromboli, it sits spectacularly on a cliff overlooking the blue expanse of the Mediterranean Sea and a 3,000-foot-high, oft-erupting volcano.

[caption id="attachment_157031" align="alignnone" width="962"] Photo credit: Lionel Luxury Real Estate[/caption]

The villa, which has been owned by the partners since the mid-1990s, was once the setting for lavish parties hosting several A-list celebrities, including Madonna and Naomi Campbell. Surprisingly, it's deceptively modest with a rustic vibe from its whitewashed façade and straight lines.

Surrounded by expansive terraces and lush gardens and trees, the property invites you to bask in the tropical beauty of its environs. The interior, however, is where the creative aesthetics of Dolce & Gabbana make a dazzling statement. According to Lionel Luxury Real Estate, who is responsible for this listing, the villa “has been renovated according to the style and taste of the two designers, who have furnished it with the same love and passion that they put into designing their clothes.”

[gallery ids="157033,157037,157036,157034,157035"]

Comprising three traditional Aeolian cottages that have been merged into a single entity, the 5,383-square-foot house has seven suites and nine bathrooms. Each suite boasts a colour theme, from sunshine yellow and turquoise blue to candy pink and neon green. Adding to the mesmerising impact of these shades are furnishings that include “unique pieces and fabrics from the fashion house combined with local handmade pieces, colourful hand-painted majolica tiles and lace curtains creating a unique aesthetic,” as described by the agency.

The living and dining areas are equally imaginative, featuring ornate chandeliers that form the central piece of wildly colourful rooms with walls that are adorned with an eclectic selection of art and numerous gold-painted antique cherubs.
Perhaps appropriately, this highly evocative space was used as the setting for a 2015 Dolce & Gabbana commercial starring Colin Farrell, for one of their fragrances.

And while there’s been much speculation behind the duo’s decision to sell this amazing property, nothing has come to the fore. One can only wonder if their losses as a result of the controversy surrounding their misguided China-based campaigns last year have anything to do with it.

In the meantime, interested buyers can look forward to sitting on the villa’s vast terrace, sipping on a fruity beverage, as the soft sea breeze of weaves through the swaying trees.

Porsche’s Eighth-Generation 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet Are Coming Soon

At last year's LA Auto Show in November, Porsche took the wraps off the performance trims of its 2020 911 portfolio; on Tuesday and not a moment too soon, the company followed up that announcement with the reveal of the lineup's base-level models: the 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet.

While the Carrera S is powered by a twin-turbocharged, flat-six boxer engine producing 443 hp and accelerating the vehicle up to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds, the entry model's identical twin-turbocharged, flat-six boxer only puts out 379 hp and takes 4.0 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from 0 mph.

Even though the drop-top version of the lowest tier option is equipped with the same engine putting out the same power as its roofed counterpart, it takes 2 extra seconds to sprint to 60 mph; top speed is also 2 mph slower than the standard Carrera which measures in at 180 mph.

To upgrade to a model whose top speed clocks in at 191 mph, the starting price increases by nearly US$16,000 (HK$125,500) despite everything else about the model being nearly identical.

The 2020 911 Carrera has a starting MSRP of US$97,400 (HK$762,500) whereas the Cabriolet trim starts at US$110,200 (HK$862,500). Both will be available for purchase starting next year.

These Vintage Nike Sneakers Sold For HK$3.4 Million at Auction and Set a New World Record

Nike Moon Shoe

This week, a pair of vintage Nike running shoes was sold at a Sotheby's public auction for US$437,500 (approx. HK$3.4 million), when a collector splurged the heart-racing amount on what is known as the 'Moon Shoe'. Nicknamed after the footprint it leaves (similar to those left on the moon), this rare pair of sneakers set a new world  auction record for a pair of sneakers.

But why are they worth over HK$3 million?, I hear you asking. Well, the Nike Waffle Racing Flat was designed by Nike co-founder and acclaimed track coach Bill Bowerman for his runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials, and only 12 pairs were ever produced. Plus, this particular pair is the only known pair that exists in unworn condition. That's right, they've never been worn: the less-than-perfect appearance is, presumably, just a by-product of ageing.

Smashing the pre-sale estimate of US$160,000 (approx. HK$1.25 million) out of the auction house, the sale also shattered the previous record for a pair of sneakers. In 2017, a pair of signed Converse shoes worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan in the 1984 Olympic basketball final fetched a healthy sum of US$190,373 (approx. HK$1.5 million).

The successful bidder was 61-year-old Canadian investor and entrepreneur Miles Nadal who had already spent US$850,000 (approx. HK$6.6 million) on 99 other pairs of unique and hard-to-find shoes in a private sale last week. Nadal said of his collectable shoe stock-up: "I am thrilled to acquire the iconic Nike 'Moon Shoes,' one of the rarest pairs of sneakers ever produced, and a true historical artefact in sports history and pop culture."

A post shared by Sotheby's (@sothebys) on

This was the first-ever auction dedicated to sneakers at Sotheby’s auction house in New York. Thanks to a collaboration with sneaker marketplace Stadium Goods, they were able to auction 100 pairs of the rarest sneakers ever produced, the results of which reflect how sneakers and streetwear culture are fast becoming the collectibles of choice. Sotheby's global e-commerce head, Noah Wunsch, added that he was “eager to see where this sale takes us, not only in future sneaker offerings, but also in other new luxury lifestyle areas.”

Nadal’s shopping cart also consisted of the 2011 and 2016 editions of Back to the Future Part II Nike shoes that were inspired by the 1989 sci-fi sequel starring Michael J Fox. Other footwear purchases included limited-edition sneakers by sport brands Air Jordan and Adidas, as well as hip-hop rapper Kanye West’s Yeezys. He plans to display his entire private sneaker collection in his Toronto automobile museum.

Travel by Design

Bringing unique designs to the world is what Louis Vuitton does. And Objets Nomades is no different. The collection features stylish, travel-inspired objects crafted by revered design stars ranging from the likes of the Campana Brothers to Hong Kong’s own Andre Fu, who combine their talents with the unparalleled savoir fair of Louis Vuitton to create pieces characterised by complex craftsmanship and innovative design.

[caption id="attachment_135120" align="alignnone" width="5000"] Aaron Kwok[/caption]

This year, Objets Nomades returns to Hong Kong for the second year, but this time the exhibition will be on display at the former Central Magistracy, marking the historic building’s first public opening. The revitalised structure, part of Tai Kwun, dates to 1914 and, complete with evocative colonial architecture, is one of the most historically significant buildings on the site. It will be further enhanced by acclaimed Hong Kong designer Joyce Wang, who is behind the avant-garde interior scenography that frames the travelling collection.

[caption id="attachment_135121" align="alignnone" width="990"] DOLLS by Raw Edges[/caption]

This edition of Objets Nomades welcomes new pieces, including award-winning design duo Raw Edges’ DOLLS playful chairs, on display for the first time internationally. London-based creatives Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay are behind this wildly dressed family of collapsible chairs, each featuring a range of fun fabrics and whimsical elements.

“Inspired by culture and folk craft, the chairs can be configured with a subtle human touch; the way we dress them gives each chair its unique context,” says Raw Edges. Each piece can be customised to make it as unique as its owner, in the tradition of Louis Vuitton’s famed trunks, which the Maison has been personalising for more than 160 years.

[caption id="attachment_135122" align="alignnone" width="3000"] Serpentine Table by Atelier Oï[/caption]

Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis and Patrick Raymond are the design minds behind Swiss brand Atelier Oï and its new Serpentine Table. Influenced in its design by the free-flowing movements of traditional dance, there is nevertheless a pleasing balance of weight and tension. American walnut legs are held together by finely worked straps made using blue Louis Vuitton leather, yet are foldable for easy storage.

Quality materials and fine craftsmanship are fundamental to Atelier Oï’s creations, and, as the collective put it, “We were immediately taken with the opportunity of collaborating with a House that stands out for the quality of its savoir-faire.”

[caption id="attachment_135127" align="alignnone" width="2500"] Doona Bae[/caption]

The final new addition to Objets Nomades saw designer Alberto Biagetti and artist Laura Baldassari of Atelier Biagetti fashion the fabulous Anemona table, the undulating base of which is covered with rich natural tan-coloured Louis Vuitton leather on the outside and a contrasting deep blue hue on the inside.

[caption id="attachment_135128" align="alignnone" width="4000"] Anemona by Atelier Biagetti[/caption]

“We did not want to create a portable object; on the contrary, we wanted the object to transport us,” says Atelier Biagetti. “So, we thought about a table – the domestic object par excellence – because it brings people together; it is convivial and inspires the telling of stories and sharing of tales. Then we thought about the sea, the very symbol of freedom, but also the setting for important forms of nomadism today. Our table emerges from the waves into the home as a symbol of hospitality, refuge and peace.”

Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades, Hong Kong runs from 23 to 31 March (10am-11pm Friday and Saturday; 10am-9pm Sunday through Thursday) at Tai Kwun, Block 9, Central Magistracy, 10 Hollywood Road, Central. Visit hk.louisvuitton.com from March 16th 2019 to register for admission. Guided tours will be offered. Complimentary downloads of the Louis Vuitton Hong Kong City Guide will also be available from March 15th to April 1st 2019.
