How the Most Stylish Guys We Know Are Dressing for a Very Different Holiday Season

Finally, an opportunity to leave your sweats behind.

US Customs Just Seized $32 Million in Counterfeits, Including Fake Dior Sneakers

The merchandise included everything from cosmetics to accessories.

From “Sex and The City” to Politics, This Exhibition Celebrates The Power of Handbags

Whether toted by Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher or "Sex and the City" actress Sarah Jessica Parker, handbags pack a powerful punch, a British exhibition reveals. The Victoria and Albert Museum is showing some 300 items at the exhibition called "Bags: Inside and Out" that opens on Saturday.

They range from a 16th-century embroidered purse to a contemporary plastic rucksack by British designer Stella McCartney. The decorative arts and design museum has chosen to focus on the accessories for its first exhibition since England's lockdown was lifted in early December.

It looks at the "It bag" craze that kicked off in the 1990s, with women flocking to buy a certain designer style, influenced by celebrity images. One such bag on show is a purple sequined Fendi baguette bag once carried by the Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, played by Parker in the hit HBO show.

There is also a formidable leather handbag once carried by Thatcher, known as her "secret weapon". Thatcher's assertive armoury of bags even led to the creation of a new verb: "to handbag", or browbeat into submission.

"These portable, yet functional accessories have long fascinated men and women with their dual nature that combines private and public," said Lucia Savi, the exhibition's curator.

From the Hermes Kelly to Lady Dior, bags are a connecting link between the home and the outside world and allow people to carry money or important documents out of sight. The exhibition's first part looks at the different uses bags are put to.

An imposing Louis Vuitton trunk from the early 20th century was made for long voyages while a tiny leather bag measuring just 16 centimetres can squeeze in a purse, an opera glass, a notebook and a mirror: all you need for a night at the opera.

The second part of the exhibition looks at bags and identity: what a bag says about the owner and their aspirations. Some have become closely associated with celebrity owners, such as Hermes's "Kelly", a bold trapezoid-shaped bag. It was renamed after the icily stylish actress Grace Kelly was photographed carrying it.

Others include the Lady Dior, known as a favourite of Princess Diana, and the Hermes' Birkin bag created after the fashion house's head Jean-Louis Dumas met the British-born actress Jane Birkin on a plane.

These days it is social media that fuels desire for the latest bag. On video, Chinese influencer Tao Liang, known as Mr Bags, talks about the designs he has collaborated on with top luxury brands such as Burberry and Chanel.

All of them are "very instagrammable," he says. "Who doesn't want a picture of themselves with a nice bag?" says the fashion blogger who claims to have 5 million followers on China's Weibo. Sometimes a bag can carry a political message, however, such as the bag bearing the slogan "My Body My Business," created by US-Swedish artist Michele Pred.

A final section of the exhibition examines the techniques used to make bags, including quirkier designs such as the US designers Thom Brown's handbag from last year in the shape of a dachshund, inspired by his dog Hector. As fast fashion falls out of favour, designers are looking at new technologies and recycling to reduce environmental impact. A pioneer in this area, Stella McCartney, used plastic waste taken from the sea to make a rucksack on display.

The contents of a handbag remain sacrosanct, especially in the case of Queen Elizabeth II, who has remained loyal to the conservative Launder brand and has several of its bags.

2020 Christmas Wish Lists: Charlene’s Picks

Having two young children at home, Christmas is a big occasion in our household. We'd usually celebrate the holidays in the US but this year, as many families are, we're staying put. We've dusted the Christmas decorations and lights and they're all decked and lit up. And as is our tradition, we'd have the girls make a wish list and it's worked wonderfully so far. One would argue it ruins the element of surprise but these days, I'd much rather get them gifts they really want. Interestingly, I've never really thought of making one myself, nor has it ever been suggested - note to the hubby . So it was a delight making my 2020 Christmas wish list, which contained just that right amount of bling, items that are practical - and not quite so, as well a few things I came across I'd also love to gift the special people in my life.

Sauvereign

Aphrodite box calf with a Cublk Gem (HK$ 54,800)

You got me at bespoke. Formerly R. Sanderson, Sauvereign provides a different retail experience where you can customise your shoes and in this case, your bag. My favourite feature? The “GEM” which you can pick to your preference to be used as the buckle that features a gold leaf - in real gold, mind you - intertwined with colours and dashed with gold powder.

Van Cleef & Arpels

Van Cleef & Arpels Rose de Noël mini model earrings (HK$ 111,000)

The French maison had just released its new Winter collection called Rose de Noël, which is ultra-feminine and dainty but can totally rock a jeans and white T-shirt ensemble. Crafted in n yellow gold, white mother-of-pearl and diamonds this pair can easily be your everyday go-to accessory.

Hermès

Hermès silk Exposition Universelle scarf by Jan Bajtlik (HK$ 3,700)

I’ve always preferred dressing in block colours, and often in dark shades so what better way to get a pop of colour than with this Hermès silk Exposition Universelle scarf designed by Jan Bajtlik. Surely it’s a fine, pastel-perfect accessory I’d love to get this Christmas.

Bvlgari

Bvlgari Serpenti white gold ring set with pavé diamonds and two emerald eyes (HK$ 331,000)

I saw this Bvlgari Serpenti diamond ring on a friend and it was quite a sight. I could not tear my eyes from it and I instantly knew it was gonna make it to my 2020 Christmas wish list. I suppose with anything Bulgari, that is always the point, is it? While it’s definitely a bold piece, it’s one you can pull off wearing casual clothes, and of course, needless to say also be perfect for that fancy night out. I also like that the ring has several articulations that make it expandable and really comfortable to wear.

Montblanc

I’m old school and still prefer jotting things down so I’ve included in my wish list Montblanc’s notebook with the Heritage Egyptomania cover - will you look at that brilliant colour combination - which is made with calfskin Saffiano leather and digital print pattern.

H. Moser & Cie

H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Flyback Chronograph Automatic Funky Blue (HK$ 332,000)

While I’m usually partial to watches that fit my wrist to a T, I will make an exception for H. Moser & Cie’s Streamliner watch. The watch is every bit sleek, reminiscent of 1920s locomotive designs. Its minimalist and steely appearance is nicely countered by the Funky Blue fumé dial.

Tiffany & Co

double cat bowl in bone china (HK$ 1,550); bone collar charm (HK$ 1,550)

I don’t have a dog, not yet anyway, but I have many friends that do so when I came across this Tiffany & Co suite of dog accessories, which includes a leather pet collar, bowl in bone china, and a collar charm, I couldn’t help get that furry feeling.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton Vivienne 4 Seasons cups set (HK$ 8,150)

These Louis Vuitton Vivienne 4 Seasons goblets made from white porcelain and painted with LV’s Vivienne mascots in different locations around the world is just something I’d love to have on the table setting - and isn’t the silver-colour rim detail such a classy touch?

Dior

And for my 7-year-old girl who loves anything and everything feminine, who has included in her wish list "high heel shoos" this pair of Dior patent calfskin Miss B ballet flats with a woven ribbon is just perfect. I can imagine it will look just as gorgeous with one of her puffy party dresses or with trousers matched with a dainty pea coat.

Cartier

To keep my work desk organised but still decorative - and festive, I'd love this Cartier Panthère de Cartier trinket tray, where I can stash everything from my Airpod case, pens, loose change and accessories.

Lalique

Having a full household, there is almost always cooking going on so we usually have scented candles lit to counter the smell, and indeed, it's just such a wonderful, relaxing aroma to linger about so this Lalique La Nuit candle caught my fancy and definitely deserves a spot in my 2020 Christmas wish list, and it burns for as long as 60 hours. And it certainly does not hurt that it looks beautiful on the coffee table next to your books and ornaments.

2020 Christmas Wish Lists: Marta’s Picks

2020 Christmas Wish List

I personally find it quite difficult to figure out what I actually want for Christmas. In fact, I tend to focus too much on what I need, rather than what I want, and it’s not until the last second that I usually come up with ideas. But not this year. 2020 has been one hell of a year and I’ve made it my mission to dream big. I’ve searched everywhere, obviously from the comfort of my house, to come up with a list of items that are worthy of a 2020 Christmas Wish List.

Fornasetti

The Metafisica Otto scented candle (HK$4,300)

Being obsessed with interior design and contemporary art, I consider Fornasetti, helmed by renowned Italian artist Piero Fornasetti, a mecca for inimitable objects that go beyond their function. The new Metafisica Otto scented candle will be a great addition to my home.

Rodarte

Floral double- breasted blazer with sequin embroidery (HK$28,721)

I don’t think there’s anything quite as exciting as sequin embroidery, and this Rodarte floral double- breasted blazer is the perfect statement piece for just about any celebration.

Dior

DiorTravel Vanity Case (HK$20,500)

I don’t think I can say it loudly enough: I can’t wait to travel again. Also, I want to do it with a DiorTravel Vanity Case embroidered with the blue Toile de Jouy motif.

Chloé

Faye bag in smooth and suede calfskin (HK$11,300)

While I don't really need a specific reason to want an effortlessly chic Chloé Faye, the small shoulder bag in smooth and suede calfskin comes in pastel mint green, which is the unofficial colour of the year and a personal favourite.

Shinola

Rose gold turntable (HK$19,380)

2020 was a great year for my vinyl collection and it’s about time I put my hands on the handcrafted rose gold Shinola Runwell turntable.

Bottega Veneta

Teddy shearling coat (HK$60,362)

I’ve been thinking about this egg yolk orange Bottega Veneta teddy shearling coat ever since I first saw it on the runway a few months ago. There’s no question that it will be a timeless addition to my winter wardrobe and a must in my 2020 Christmas wish list.

Delfina Delettrez

18kt champagne gold “Eyes on me” diamond and sapphire earring (HK$15,111)

I’m all on board with the eye mania trend and I’ve been dreaming to wear this Delfina Delettrez 18kt champagne gold “Eyes on me” diamond and sapphire earring.

Dior Further Elevates Its Revolutionary Anti-aging Formula L’Or de Vie

Dior L’Or de Vie

Conceived in Château Yquem, Dior’s L’Or de Vie La Crème and L’Or de Vie La Cure 2019, launching this December, are formulated with an elevated version of the Yquem sap, the most precious ingredient in the Dior Gardens that makes them unique and remarkably effective.

An embodiment of French luxury, Château d’Yquem is a unique vineyard located in the Bordeaux region of France that transcends centuries with the highest level of excellence. The magic of this location and its invaluable heritage are coupled with the benefits of the long-lasting cultivation methods and the exclusive sap that runs through the heart of the vine, the inspiration behind Dior's groundbreaking masterpiece.

In 2007, after more than 30 years of research, Dior Science discovered the unique life force of the Yquem vineyards, and created L’Or de Vie, the precious skincare line that infuses the epidermis with the full power of Yquem, creating extraordinary long-lasting reinvigorating effects.

Now, after the success and praise that L’Or de Vie obtained thanks to its revolutionary approach, Dior Science has further elevated its quest for excellence in L’Or de Vie La Crème and a new 2019 vintage of L’Or de Vie La Cure with a super-concentrated formula of the Yquem sap, a youthful elixir for the skin.

As a powerful antioxidant that targets 200 longevity factors, L’Or de Vie acts on many mechanisms and enzymes connected to aging and the oxidation of cells, creating long-lasting youthfulness. Remarkably, Dior Science has succeeded in extracting the powerful attributes of the Yquem sap by harvesting the vine shoots at the beginning of each spring and drying them over a period of at least six months to achieve the maximum molecular richness of this precious elixir. After 17 essential purification and extraction stages, the Dior experts are able to double the concentration of Yquem sap in L’Or de Vie La Crème. The final product is a formulation that is 94% composed of natural-origin and sustainable ingredients that are respectful of every type of skin.

Each year, L’Or de Vie is also accompanied by a new vintage of La Cure. A Dior skincare crown jewel in a limited edition, this 2019 vintage provides radical action to tackle all signs of aging including wrinkles, firmness, radiance, hydration and evenness. A three-month treatment with a formula that contains 88% natural-origin ingredients combining the highest concentration of the Yquem sip molecular richness, it infuses the skin with its unique formula leaving the skin already luminous and changed after a month of application.

A self-assessment conducted by 32 women after three months of using La Cure vintage 2019 shows the incredible powers of this product. According to the data provided, wrinkles decreased of approximately 19%, while radiance (+53%), hydration (+76%), smoothness (+54%), and firmness (+54%) were remarkably improved.

Carefully crafted in the House of Dior ateliers, the three wax-stamped bottles containing La Cure are sealed with golden thread, in a recapitulation of the knot of vine shoots at the Yquem vines. Alongside them lie two golden massage drops to enhance the power of La Cure during a deep massage treatment developed by the Dior Institut’s experts. When used with cold water, the drops’ thermal memory material decongests and drains, while it charges up with relaxing heat under the effects of hot water.
