5 Brands That Prove Bar Soaps are Good for Your Face

What once was taboo is now the recommended skincare cleanser. With that, we take a look at the best facial bars for every type of skin.

There was a time when using the same bar of body soap on your face was a thing. But as we now know, different areas of the skin require very distinctive attention. Consequently, bar soaps were blacklisted from our skincare regime for its harsh detergent constituents and skin drying factors.

Since then, beauty brands have realised that it isn’t the bar itself that is the culprit, but the formulation. Thus began the reintroduction of bar soaps in our routine. Easy to travel with (no spillage), keeping well over time, and environmentally friendly (reduced packaging), more and more are looking to our old ways for new results.

For those looking to switch up their cleansing game, we’ve rounded up the best facial bar soaps for every skin type.

Chanel Sublimage Radiance-Revealing Rich Cleansing Soap

Best for: Mature Skin

[caption id="attachment_207359" align="alignnone" width="2075"] HK$650[/caption]

As the name implies, Chanel’s Radiance Revealing Rich Cleansing Soap is a luxuriously indulgent product. The bar is composed of vanilla flower extract with highly potent antioxidant properties and shea butter for intense hydration. The bar lathers up to produce a gorgeous silky foam that cleanses and purifies to reveal illuminated skin. The beautiful carved soap also comes with its very own soap dish.

Drunk Elephant Juju Bar

Best for: Sensitive Skin

[caption id="attachment_207362" align="alignnone" width="2072"] HK$220[/caption]

Drunk Elephant has earned a very loyal cult following for its natural products and creative packaging. One of two of the brand’s facial bar soaps is the Juju Bar – a low pH level formula (unlike other soaps with detergent components) which gives you squeaky clean skin without stripping away the hydration. The subtle exfoliation is countered with healing elements to refine the skin’s texture without the feeling of tightness afterwards. Free of fragrance, essential oils, dyes, colourants and irritants, it is suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Fresh Umbrian Clay Treatment Bar

Best for: Oily Skin

[caption id="attachment_207361" align="alignnone" width="2075"] HK$350[/caption]

For when washing your face still isn’t clean enough, it's Fresh’s Umbrian Clay Treatment Bar to the rescue. Offering a very deep and thorough cleanse, the Umbrian clay extracts impurities from within the pores. Great for oily or acne-prone skin in the summer, it ensures that all skin slough is flushed out. To complement the clay, ingredients like cranberry, bamboo and bitter orange work together for a full exfoliation. Once a week, work up a lather, and leave on for 10 minutes as a clarifying mask. Dull skin is now renewed.

Sisley Botanical Soapless Facial Cleansing Bar

Best for: Combination Skin

[caption id="attachment_207363" align="alignnone" width="2073"] HK$360[/caption]

Naturally purifying and gentle to skin, Sisley’s Botanical Cleansing Bar leaves skin with a smooth, matte finish and radiant complexion. Enriched with calendula and tropical resins (incense, myrrh and benzoin), it forms a fine-textured creamy lather that washes off for an instant sensation of freshness. A magnet for makeup and dirt, it isolates and removes all impurities from the skin on your face.

Sulwhasoo Herbal Soap

Best for: Normal to Dry Skin

[caption id="attachment_207360" align="alignnone" width="2075"] HK$340[/caption]

Extracting the beauty properties of Korean medicinal herbs (like red ginseng for anti-oxidisation, Chinese peony for healing, and Solomon’s seal and anti-inflammation), Sulwhasoo’s Herbal Soap cleanses the skin while nourishing it too. Using a 40-day ageing process to lock in all the goodness of the ingredients, the Herbal Soap is packed nutrients and most importantly supports the skin’s moisture barrier to lock in all the goodness. A special bonus if you enjoy the refreshing zingy scent of ginseng.

Top Shelf: The Brands Brewing the Best Tea-Infused Beauty Products

Tea has been an integral and customary part of Chinese culture for centuries. It’s only the most consumed beverage in the world, heck there were even wars over this ancient brew. But now, these incredible cured leaves are examined under the microscope as we've come to discover its potent beauty benefits. Every big beauty brand out there is extracting its beauty-boosting powers to some degree to infuse into their new host of beauty elixirs.

Packed with natural caffeine, antioxidants, amino-acid and flavonoids, tea is a super-ingredient that’s been tested to help with the following: hydration, detox, de-puff, tightening, anti-inflammation, defend against free-radicals, skin metabolism, relaxation… you get it – the list goes on and on.

We’ve tried and tested bottle after bottle, jar after jar, to bring you the top 5 brews of beauty you need to make space on top shelf for right now.

Amore Pacific Time Response Vintage Wash Off Masque

[caption id="attachment_192447" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Amore Pacific Time Response Vintage Wash Off Masque[/caption]

Sourced from Dolsongi Tea Garden, the oldest green tea garden on Jeju island in South Korea (and exclusive owned by Amore Pacific), the 34-year-old leaves are carefully selected before they're used in the Korean brand’s bestseller. The antioxidant properties of the green tea extract softens the skin instantly, and with prolonged use is moisturised and plumped. On top of that, the skin tone is evened out too. The best part though, is the scent, and the fact that it only takes 10 minutes of your day, twice a week.

Brewed with the brand’s very own black tea complex and an eye-defining peptide to lift the baggage under the eye area, tighten loose skin, iron out fine lines and diminish the look of crow’s feet to reveal younger, more radiant skin and bright eyes. Unlike other eye serums, this one is delightfully lightweight and absorbs instantly without leaving any sticky residue. To be used on its own or layered underneath an eye cream as a moisture barrier to lock in hydration. Fresh also carries a line of other tea products using similar ingredient components that are worth mentioning too, including the Kombucha Facial Essence, Firming Corset Cream and Overnight Mask.

The chamomile tea extract soothes stressed and blemished skin, while salicylic acid removes buildup and decongests pores and cucumber seed oil counterbalances the drying effects. The result is nourished, glowing skin, even-tone complexion and reduced acne discolouration. What’s more is that this can be used to treat scalp and back acne too.

The Beauty Products We Loved This Year

We reveal our favourite beauty discoveries of the past year -- find out what our go-to skincare brands are, make-up we never leave home without, where you'll find us when we're in need of a luxurious spa treatment, and what 2020 launches we're excited about.

Favourite Treatment

Chantecaille's Rose de Mai Signature Facial is a big drink of goodness to quench your skin's thirst. Every visit is an opportunity to catch up on zzzs and I wake up to plumped, glowy skin. Plus, the delicate scent is reason itself to love this treatment.

Favourite Make-up Brand

A post shared by Charlotte Tilbury, MBE (@ctilburymakeup) on

Walking into Charlotte Tilbury makes me feel like a kid at a candy shop. The legendary makeup artist is the queen of colour. Her glamorous eyeshadow palettes are highly pigmented and easily blendable and buildable. To top it all, all her products are so beautiful in her signature modern-boudoir packaging.

Make-up item I can't live without...

Having gone under the knife earlier this year (and by that, I mean microblading), I was ready to shake my brow make-up dependency. But shu uemura hard formula pencil (a combination of powder, wax and semi-solid oil; HK$200) will always have a spot on my top shelf. I still use it when I want extra definition.

Beauty product I'm always hoarding

Masks. Be they sheet, mud, gel, peel-off or sleep. Following any masking routine, my skin feels fresh and renewed. My top-shelf products I use on rotation include WEI's Lotus Blossom Thirst Relief Sheet Mask (HK$430/6 sheets), Apivita's Prickly Pear Moisturising & Soothing Mask (HK$245) and Fresh's Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask (HK$490).

Favourite beauty hack I learned

A post shared by TATCHA Beauty (@tatcha) on

I've started to exfoliate once or twice a week after workouts. Sweat opens your pores so you can get a deeper cleanse and rid all impurities this way. I can control the cleanse with Tatcha's The Rice Polish Calming (HK$600) and add more or less water depending on the exfoliation I need.

Favourite overall beauty discovery

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Valmont Official Account (@valmontcosmetics) on

So much has launched in 2019. But my favourite find has to be the Valmont Teint Majestuex Satin Glow Foundation (HK$1,650). What I love most about it is that it's a hybrid between make-up and skincare offering a glowy satin-like finish without drying out the skin. It also works great with the Poudre de Teint Précieuse compact powder (HK$1,380) when I need to touch up on too much shine.

Brand I'll always be loyal to

When it comes to Canvas, I can find no fault. All its products are at least 90 percent natural and organic, so I can rest easy knowing they won't irritate my very sensitive skin. I'm especially fond of the Rose Otto collection.

Favourite skincare product

A post shared by Sunday Riley (@sundayriley) on

Depending on when you ask me this, my answer will probably change. But I'm currently obsessing over Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil (HK$450). A winning combo of retinol and blue tansy, the oil works through the night to reduce fine lines, the appearance of pores and redness. I also like that the formula is grease-proof and absorbs into your skin (rather than your pillowcase).

Favourite haircare product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ghd Hong Kong (@ghdhairhk) on

I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of negligence when it comes to my hair. I find a good quality hairdryer is more than half the battle. The ghd Air Hairdryer is fast-drying, controls frizz and ives my fine lifeless hair a boost of volume.

Favourite beauty personality I met this year

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Angela Caglia Skincare (@angelacagliaskincare) on

Meeting Angela Caglia during her visit for her brand's launch at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong was rather memorable. She's made a name for herself by creating such beautiful, easy-to-use and effective tools. I've been hearing about her for some time now, so finally meeting her face-to-face and trying out her line was a real treat.

Favourite beauty device

Face massages helps to stimulate collagen production, plus it's relaxing when you're just sitting in front of the TV or computer. Frame Cosmetics has a Thermal Vibration Face Massaging Device (HK$4,680), which has a heating and cooling effect on top of a pulsating function that's said to help penetrate serums into deeper layers of the skin. All it takes is about 10 minutes and you've got yourself a mini at-home facial.

Favourite beauty-related social media to follow

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gelcream (@gelcream) on

@gelcream posts the most beautiful product shots and honest reviews about new products. The only downside is that it will guarantee Instaenvy. Everything you find here will somehow make its way on to your wish list.

Favourite Fragrance

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gucci (@gucci) on

I've always been a sucker or oral fragrances and my current favourite is Gucci Bloom Acqua Di Fiori (HK$1,040). The white-floral bouquet scent reminds me of fresh cut flowers without the overpowering sweetness, thanks to its earthy undertones.

Favourite Bodycare Product

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Aesop (@aesopskincare) on

I would recommend the Aesop body range to anyone regardless of their skin type. The cleansers are gentle on the skin thanks to the nourishing botanical ingredients and are suitable year-round. Its Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser (HK$325) and Body Scrub (HK$260) are my top choices -- the fresh pine-needle and sage scent really wakes me up.

The next product I can't wait to get my hands on

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Augustinus Bader (@augustinusbader) on

It would be impossible for me to list them all as there are so many products on my wish list! But I will say that I've been eyeing the 111Skin Rose Gold Radiance Booster (HK$895) and any of its masks for some time now. If it's good enough for Margot Robbie, Kim Kardashian and Priyanka Chopra, I can live with it. I've also heard some great things about the Dr Barbara Sturm Calming Serum (HK$1,930) and Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader (HK$2,100) that I wouldn't mind trying out too.

Kiss From A Rose: The Benefits of the Powerful Beauty Ingredient

Long associated with religion, nobility and -- of course -- romance, roses have also been used in Chinese and other herbal forms of medicine, as a vitamin supplement and even as a natural sweetener. But perhaps nowhere has the flower caught on more as a luxury ingredient than in skincare and cosmetics.

Rose and rosehip oils, and the various tinctures made from them, have been proven to heal and moisturise the skin, reduce redness, combat inflammation and provide high levels of antioxidants. All of which makes them a perfect addition to everything from toners to face masks to lip treatments.

Several brands have gone a step further and created entire collections based on the benefits of rose. Chantecaille, which uses extracts of the rare Rose de Mai to create its Pure Rosewater face mist, has made rosewater the basis of all of its skincare products. Sisley has built a cult following for its Black Rose line comprising a mask, oil and cream infused with softening and anti-ageing extracts of the black rose as well as Bulgarian rose.

Likewise, Fresh uses real rose petals for its collection of rose-powered toners, serums, masks and moisturisers. Dior has created its “first micro-nutritive fluid skincare foundation” enriched with extracts from the wild Rose de Granville, and Lancôme has added rose oil to its new L’Absolu Mademoiselle Shine lipstick for hydration and effortless application.

“We call it ‘nature’s wonder’,” says Fresh founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg. “The flower yields a precious oil that is known to hydrate, soothe and tone the skin, and the scent adds a unique mood-enhancing quality to the experience of using it.”

Beauty Flight Plan: Travel Essentials for Any Destination

Between the dry cabin air, sodium-rich food and questionable hygiene standards, we can all agree that air travel is rough on our skin, our bodies and any attempt at looking or feeling halfway decent.

But with hours to do little else except watch movies and try, in vain, to sleep, flights can be the perfect time to indulge in some spa-style pampering. All of the products you see on these pages are TSA-approved (that’s 100 ml/3.4 ounces or less for liquids, in case you’ve forgotten) and so convenient that you can use them without even leaving your seat.
If you follow any celebrities or supermodels on social media, you’ve probably read about or even seen selfies of them applying a sheet mask right after take-off. 111Skin’s version is a great option when flying, thanks to its gel-like structure and super-fine fibres that help lock moisture into the skin. It’s designed for use before a big event or after a holiday, so be sure to bring one for the departing flight and one for the trip home.
If you’re worried about scaring fellow passengers with a full face mask, you can always opt for Laneige’s new Cica Sleeping Mask. The yeast-enriched formula can help skin withstand external irritation, something that’s practically guaranteed with plane travel.

Finally, when it comes to freshening up mid-flight or before landing, be sure to pack some moisturiser, fragrance, lip balm and hand cream. After all, just because you stepped off a 16-hour flight doesn’t mean you have to look like you did.

111Skin

Tested in extreme conditions not unlikea commercial airline flight, the Anti Blemish Bio Cellulose Facial Mask soothes, purifies and rebalances the skin.

With its alcohol-freesafflower-seed-oil base and convenient roller-ball applicator, Le Labo’s liquid balms are our choice forfragrance on the go.

Eve Lom

Rich enough to withstand arid cabin conditions and infused with botanical extracts, the Moisture Cream is a pleasant treat mid-flight or at your final destination.

Byredo

Rose of No Man’s Land Hand Cream combines much-needed hydration and a unique rose and pink pepper scent. And it’s only 30 ml.

Fresh

Who doesn’t want to smell and feel minty fresh after a long flight? The new Sugar Mint Rush Freshening Lip Treatment releases a cooling sensation when lips are pressed together.

Weary travellers are in for a treat with this set of four hair- and bodycare staples in refreshing botanical scents. Also available are Departure and Jet Set kits.

The K-Beauty brand has added to its popular overnight- treatment line with Cica Sleeping Mask, featuring a forest- derived yeast that’s proven to restore and strengthen the skin barrier.

7 Steps To Achieve Glass Skin, The K-Beauty Comeback Trend for Summer

It’s no secret that we (and the rest of the world) look towards the beauty capital that is South Korea for our skin goals. And when the masters of skincare came up with the “glass skin” trend -- an almost translucent complexion and luminous glow that seems to radiate from within -- a few years back, we were hooked. This season, it's returned in a big way. After all, who doesn’t want a gleamingly clear, poreless, dewy complexion?

So for those of you that are ready to get on board, here’s our step-by-step guide to achieving glass skin:

1. Double Cleanse

It all starts with a clean canvas. Beautiful skin is healthy skin, so hygiene is top priority. Begin with an oil cleanser that dissolves away impurities and stubborn makeup. Valmont’s Wonder Falls is a cream-melt-to-oil formula and gets the job done without stripping your face of moisture. Part two involves a water-base product like Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Enzyme Cleanser that ensures any residue or oil from part one is taken care of. The powder format allows you to blend your own concentration depending on your skin’s condition and specific needs.

[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/valmont-wonder-falls_5.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-407.jpg" right-caption="Valmont Wonder Falls" left-caption="Dr. Barbara Sturm Enzyme Cleanser"]

2. Mask

What Glass Skin requires is hydration. Be it sheet masks (Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask), wash off masks (Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask) or leave-in overnight masks (Laneige Water Sleeping Mask) — make sure to overindulge your skin with moisture, or better yet, drench your skin in nutrients for that luminous glow.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-408.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-409.jpg" right-caption="Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask" left-caption="Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask"]

3. Tone

Preferably choose something with a brightening element to it. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, and Rose Water. Layer on Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner or Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Essence-in-Lotion so your skin can soak in all the moisture for that plump and supple look.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Fresh_RoseDHToner_seal-490.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-412.jpg" right-caption="Fresh Rose Toner" left-caption="Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Essence-in-Lotion"]

4. Moisturise

Moisturise lots! Unlike makeup, when it comes to moisturising, more reallyis more. Keep in all the goodness with a moisturiser that works for your skin type and your environment. Here in Hong Kong, you’re going to want a light formula (like First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream or Helena Rubinstein Prodigy Cellglow The Radiant Regenerating Cream) that won’t clog your pores. Remember you want glassy, not greasy.

[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-418.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-413.jpg" right-caption="First Aid Beauty Coconut Water Cream" left-caption="Helena Rubinstein The Radiant Regenerating Cream"]

5. Protect

Nothing damages the skin more than UV, regardless of the weatherman’s prediction for sunny, overcast or thunderstorm days. A good offence is a good defence so an SPF barrier is a must. For our climate, SPF50 is a good benchmark. Similar to your moisturiser, pick something airy like Derm Institute’s Cellular Brightening Daily Defense SPF50+ or Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion SPF 50+.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-411.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-410.jpg" right-caption="Derm Institute Cellular Brightening Daily Defense" left-caption="Sofina Super Moisture UV Cut Emulsion"]

6. Colour correct

Be careful in what you select, as not all products are going to work for the glass look. Clearly, avoid any matte formulas, and turn to water-based formulas such as NARS Sheer Glow Foundation. A play on light can help to accentuate the glow, so an illuminating highlighter (like Charlotte Tilbury’s Goldgasm) on the cheekbones, brow bone and cupid’s bow can amplify the glossy glow.
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-415.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-414.jpg" right-caption="Charlotte Tilbury Goldgasm" left-caption="NARS Sheer Glow Foundation"]

7. Mist

For an extra boost (and a lot of sheen), seal in everything with a facial mist. This is also going to be your skin’s pick-me-up throughout the day, so keep a small bottle ready for when the slightest signs of dulling begin to appear (Aesop’s Immediate Moisture Facial Mist or Estée Lauder Micro Essence Aquaceutical Mist).

[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-416.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Untitled-design-417.jpg" right-caption="Estée Lauder Moisture Facial Mist" left-caption="Aesop Immediate Moisture Facial Mist"]
