Time Stands Still With La Prairie’s Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation

la prairie

La Prairie’s Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation gets a little rejuvenation itself, with a new formula and packaging that make the best skincare even better.

La Prairie has long been recognised as one of the most premium labels in the beauty industry, and the Platinum Rare line represents the pinnacle of its collections, consolidating the best of its research and technology to create rarefied balms and elixirs that constitute modern miracles.

La Prairie’s Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation takes inspiration from the namesake sought-after precious metal, enabling skin to be as if suspended in time, thanks to groundbreaking rejuvenation technologies developed at the Clinique La Prairie in Montreux, Switzerland, the home of the brand.

[caption id="attachment_211694" align="alignnone" width="1024"]La Prairie La Prairie’s Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation.[/caption]

Beyond a feat of science, Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation is a true expression of the house’s savoir-faire, created as artfully as a delicate piece of couture, but infused with cutting-edge innovation and technology that are able to awaken the skin’s natural process of rejuvenation.

Identifying five key processes that activate the skin’s healing powers, La Prairie has created a product that triggers the body to begin a loop of rejuvenation that addresses all layers of the skin, fighting signs of ageing on all fronts.

This formula is improved on a continuous basis, and the version released in 2020 combines the patented Exclusive Cellular Complex with a new Platinum Multi-Peptide, a complex of three separate peptides that tag along with spherical platinum particles to awaken cellular renewal. Beyond spurring the production of collagen, the new ingredients strengthen the skin barrier, improve moisture balance and enhance cellular longevity.

An elevated sensorial experience, elegant packaging and product efficacy are three pillars of equal importance and excellence that are unified in Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation, and so an update in formula has been necessarily accompanied by a revision of the vessels in which these precious creams are held.

The relaxing amethyst shade that signifies the Platinum Rare collection has been retained, with luxurious platinum-toned detailing added that decorates the pipettes and pump buttons, a visual recollection of the eponymous noble metal. Platinum boxes encase each item, echoing the reverence given to haute joaillerie items.

Each time the products are applied, whether it is the Night Elixir, Eye Cream or any other part of this winning line-up, it is a reminder to dedicate time to self-care rituals, and to give your skin nothing but the very best.

How Mask-Wearing has Transformed Our Beauty Habits

Face masks have now been made mandatory in enclosed spaces in many countries worldwide, and must even be worn outdoors in cities particularly affected by coronavirus infections.

Evidently, mask-wearing has shaken up many aspects of our daily lives, right down to our beauty regimes. From makeup to facial care and product textures, not to mention acne-zapping products, here's a look at some of the changes face masks are bringing to your bathroom and your makeup bag, all in spite of the latest trends.

No makeup: From dream to reality

While plenty of celebrities, such as Alicia Keys, embraced the "no makeup" face well before the global pandemic, lockdown has changed the game profoundly, offering people a real opportunity to accept themselves without makeup.

[caption id="attachment_211494" align="aligncenter" width="640"]mask-wearing beauty Alicia Keys has been an advocate of #nomakeup even before Covid-19 happened. (Image: Alicia Keys/ Facebook)[/caption]

A global trend that has visibly transcended borders given the proliferation of hashtags like "#nomakeup," "#nomakeupday," "#nomakeupchallenge" or "#nomakeupselfie" that have swamped social media this year, all accompanied by pictures showing the world that self-acceptance is today more than just a theory.

This analysis is reinforced by mask-wearing, which isn't particularly compatible with wearing makeup. As well as hiding carefully made-up faces, masks cause foundation and lipstick to rub off in a few minutes, and can increase the risk of blemishes. Those are three good reasons that have led many women to banish makeup from their beauty routines.

[caption id="attachment_211493" align="alignnone" width="1024"]mask-wearing beauty If you're wearing a face mask and shades, you can probably skip makeup altogether. (Image: Bara Buri/ Unsplash)[/caption]

In fact, a poll of 3,018 people carried out by Ifop for the Slow Cosmétique label back in June revealed that 21% of French women surveyed reported wearing makeup every day at the end of lockdown, compared to 42% in 2017. This drop suggests that major changes are afoot in women's beauty habits.

New boom: Mascaras and transfer-resistant products

And even those who aren't (yet) fully onboard the "no makeup" movement have seen their habits change. This is again reflected in the Ifop survey for Slow Cosmétique, which shows that women who regularly wear makeup are now paying more attention to their eyes, rather than skin and, in particular, lips.

And the reason, as mentioned above, is not only that it isn't seen, but also that it simply doesn't stay on due to the rubbing of the mask causing transfer. This observation is supported by sales and searches for these products online, which confirm the current appetite for mascaras, eyeliners and eyebrow products to the detriment of lipsticks and facial products. Interestingly, these products were all the rage before the public health crisis hit, notably driven by trends for contouring, highlighting and baking, and the generally sculpted look.

[caption id="attachment_211499" align="alignnone" width="1024"]mask-wearing beauty Eye makeup is now more important than ever. (Image: Kelly Sikkema/ Unsplash)[/caption]

While many women have given up on lipstick and facial products, others are favouring more specific products, making way for a new trend — the boom in transfer-proof formulations. Brands have been offering such products for several weeks, responding to growing demand from makeup fans who don't want to give in to the mask.

Originally developed to stop lipstick transferring during a meal, when sipping a drink or giving a kiss, these products now seem like the ideal solution for mask-wearing times. Note that lightweight formulations and setting products like powders are also prime choices to overcome the inconvenience of mask-wearing.

Maskne and other skin blemishes

You've no doubt already have heard of "mascne" or "maskne" — acne from wearing face masks — which has become a problem since mask-wearing was made mandatory. These blemishes, or even acne, are caused by the rubbing of the mask and the elastic straps, as well as by the fact that facial coverings stop the skin from breathing.

It's a problem that can affect anyone, at any age — even if people with blemish-prone skin are more susceptible to the problem — and can require a few tweaks to beauty regimes. Before reaching for any kind of product to treat maskne, start by setting — and sticking to — a few day-to-day ground rules. For example, favour fabric masks, which are more breathable than surgical varieties, and change your mask several times a day.

[caption id="attachment_211500" align="aligncenter" width="769"]mask-wearing beauty Spend more time on skincare, as mask-wearing may aggravate existing conditions and cause blemishes. (Image: Coline Hasle/ Unsplash)[/caption]

When it comes to beauty routines, the usual techniques should be reinforced: Removing makeup and cleansing skin are now non-negotiable at the end of a day in a mask. Next, treat skin with a suitable skincare product, and hydrate skin every morning before putting your mask back on.

It's a good idea to use more lightweight textures than usual and to look for non-comedogenic products to reduce the risk of spots, redness and other blemishes. Note that foundation can contribute to preventing skin breathing too. It's therefore better to reduce the use of this product if you don't want to end up dealing with acne.

Tiffany Masterson of Drunk Elephant on Pushing Boundaries in Clean Beauty

drunk elephant

Tiffany Masterson is no ordinary beauty entrepreneur.

Back in 2012 when she launched the clean skincare line Drunk Elephant, the beauty world can be divided into either those giant brands who championed fantasy ingredients and imaginatively inspiring story, or more result and ingredients-driven brands with a clinical and minimal (boring) look that lacks aesthetic appeal. Drunk Elephant, with its ingredient-elimination philosophy, combines real, thought-provoking backstory with results-driven formulation and aesthetically-pleasing package designs.

Within eight years, Drunk Elephant has become one of the biggest “clean” beauty brands in the industry, let alone one of the very first to pioneer both the term and the trend. Last year, the brand was acquired by Japanese beauty conglomerate Shiseido in a US$845 million deal that was the second biggest beauty acquisition in 2019 after L’Occitane’s acquisition of British skincare brand Elemis. The Shiseido acquisition was a move that Masterson considered necessary in order to “take [the brand] to the next level.”

But before we get to know what would become of Drunk Elephant under Shiseido’s wings, Prestige talks to Masterson about her years in this industry, and what she thinks of her role in pushing the boundaries of the clean beauty movement.

Here’s What Happened When We Switched to Fragrance-Free Skincare

By now, your bosses and colleagues have probably seen more of your abode than you would've ever expected to show them.

With many of us working from home these days, meetings held over video conferencing apps the likes of Zoom and Microsoft Teams have become the new normal. Inevitably, this means letting colleagues into our residences — albeit virtually — and having them catch glimpses of it via our backdrop. Depending on where your workspace is located, this view could range from a boring blank wall to windows or cluttered bookshelves.

Your makeshift office may not be the most glamorous, but there are several easy interior design tricks that you can employ to quickly jazz up the background of your Zoom calls.

Textiles and cushions

If your workstation of choice is the couch or bed, all it takes is a few snazzy throw pillows wrapped in eye-catching fabrics and prints to provide visual interest in the space behind you. Consider dressing your cushions in the Armani/Casa Exclusive Textiles by Rubelli collection, which is inspired by modern art — specifically works by Henri Matisse, Vasilij Kandinskij and Paul Klee.

It showcases striking colour blocks embellished with embroideries, ikat details and intertwined motifs. These are available in various patterns and shades ranging from pastel to neutral hues. More details here.

Houseplants and greenery

Adding houseplants to your home office will help the space look less spartan and bland. Smaller plants like cacti, succulents and spider plants can be displayed on shelves or tables, while larger ones such as philodendrons, snake plants and ZZ plant (Zanzibar Gem) can be placed on the floor to break the monotony of blank walls.

Online plant retailer Flora Houses offers a wide variety of houseplants that will thrive indoors and are generally low-maintenance. Its range includes Japanese fir, fiddle leaf fig and Bird of Paradise. The store provides free doorstep delivery with a minimum spend.

Artworks and paintings

Perhaps houseplants may seem like too much of a commitment, or you simply don't have green fingers. This is where paintings and art pieces make an easier alternative. You can simply hang a couple of them on the wall that constantly forms your video call backdrop.

An Andy Warhol or Basquiat will certainly impress your co-workers, but your art doesn't necessarily have to be expensive or by big name artists. Consider procuring artworks instead from indie galleries such as Odd One Out, which boasts an array of creations by local and international printmakers and illustrators. We can't take our eyes off the above acrylic painting by Micke Lindebergh, which is titled 'Small Yellow Flower Pot' and features colourful blooms accented by quirky squiggles and bright hues.

Statement ornaments and furniture

Inject a dose of quirk into your meeting setup by peppering your background with assorted decorative items and statement furniture pieces. These can be anything from figurines to colourful tiles and dramatic room dividers.

Our go-to is Lala Curio, which is a whimsical wonderland of objets d'art such as brass monkey sculptures, cloisonné birds, and, one of our favourites — an adorable trio of cranes adorned with rock crystal feathers and perched on crystal balls.

Wallpaper

Why settle for one specially curated work area, when you can turn your whole room into an Instagram-worthy space? Wallpaper is a bold and easy solution — if every wall in your room is clad in beautiful prints, you can essentially park yourself in any corner and still have an envy-inducing Zoom backdrop.

Designer wallpaper has seen a resurgence in recent years, and we're obsessed with Christian Lacroix's exquisite Oiseau Fleur vinyl wallpaper, which depicts vibrant botanical and bird motifs against a silk effect embossed base. It comes in two colourways of pink and grey.

Fifty metres underground — this is the depth that local winemakers chose when they decided to store 10,000 wine bottles in the Aven d'Orgnac caves, an underground tourist attraction located at the southern end of the limestone plateau of the Gorges de l'Ardèche.

The experiment began in March 2018, when a new storage facility was specially created in a disused access tunnel to allow wine to mature in what amounts to a highly stable and peaceful environment.

A living product that ages best in undisturbed darkness, the wine will have benefited from ideal conditions: A constant temperature of around 12°C and an all-year-long rate of humidity of over 95%.

On December 12, 1,000 bottles of Côtes du Vivarais "Grand Aven 2017" from this treasure trove will be passed from hand to hand by a chain of human volunteers who will bring them back to the surface after two years underground. Thereafter, they will go under the hammer with a range of other local vintages in an auction with modest reserve prices.

Lots on offer will include 150 magnums of Terra Helvorum 2017 starting at 30 euros, 350 bottles of 2015 Terra Helvorum for as little as 15 euros and 350 bottles of Grand Aven 2016 from just 10 euros.

On land and sea

These days, experiments to store wine deep underground are very much in vogue in France. On June 3 of this year, 500 bottles were placed in racks at a depth of 103 metres in caves in Padirac under the watchful eye of Serge Dubs, the Best Sommelier of the World in 1989.

The first of these to return to the surface will be brought up for an initial tasting in the spring of 2021. And let's not forget that this experiment is focused on a very particular wine: A Clos Triguedina Cahors, christened Cuvée Probus, which has been produced to honour the 130-year anniversary of the Padirac Chasm.

Surprisingly enough, this new approach to maturing wine was initially inspired by a find at sea. In 2010, divers in the Baltic discovered a wreck containing what turned out to be a cargo of champagne, which was probably on its way to 1840s Russia.

The wave of experimentation that is now ongoing began when the bubbly, which was made by such houses as Veuve Clicquot, Heidsieck and the now defunct Juglar, was discovered to still be delicious after some 170 years under water.

In Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the French Basque country, winemaker Emmanuel Poirmeur has registered a patent for a process that involves vinifying wine in special vats at a depth of 15 metres under water. For its part, Leclerc-Briant set a record when it vinified one of its champagnes at a depth of 60 meters under the Atlantic in 2012, not surprisingly the vintage was christened "Abyss."

3 After-Mask Recovery Tips for Fresh and Clear Skin

It's no secret that face masks --a huge part of our new normal-- is wreaking havoc on our skin. Here's how to curb the problem.

From breakouts and irritation, to dehydration and clogged pores, the frustration with mask-related skin issues are very real. So how can we tackle this in an age where face masks are absolutely necessary? FANCL has the answer with three after-mask recovery tips that result in cleaner, brighter and fresher skin.

Cleanse

Whether you are wearing make-up or not, cleansing is always going to be the first step in any good skincare routine. But it is effective facial cleansing that needs to take place in order to remove as much dirt, oil, and other unwanted debris as possible. The Nano Cleansing Technology in Prestige's Beauty & Wellness Awards 2020 winner FANCL MCO Mild Cleansing Oil does just that, and cleanses deep into the pores of your face, lifting out even the most stubborn waterproof makeup and pore-clogging dirt.

Unclog

Increased humidity under your mask, especially around the nose or chin area, can produce excess sebum that will congest pores and in some cases, cause blackheads. FANCL's Pore Cleansing Pack is the easiest way to banish deep-rooted blackheads and unclog pores. The new formula, with sea mineral clay, konjac extract particles, and the upgraded element of spherical activated charcoal, help to draw out impurities from within the pores in one fell swoop, ensuring that your skin is clean at once.

Purify

Couple this with the Yogurt Facial Treatment by FANCL, which is made to purify and eliminate oxidised and rough dead skin cells, and you're set. After cleansing, simply massage the treatment into your skin which is brimming with yogurt filtrate, pear juice ferment filtrate and hydrolyzed yeast extract which helps to restore the skin to its optimal condition while removing dead skin cells and speeding up skin renew; fresh royal jelly extract which helps to boost skin metabolism, prevent and relieve acne marks; and green tea extract which smooths out a rough and dull complexion, as it tightens pores, to restore a clearer complexion.
