Virgil Abloh’s Off-White™ Ventures into the Living Space with New HOME Collection

Virgil Abloh, Founder of luxury streetwear line Off-White™ and current menswear artistic director for Louis Vuitton, has been experiencing what can only be described as immense success in a very short period of time. And now, the cult American fashion brand has branched out with HOME; a collection of exclusive home furnishings and accessories.

HOME offers decorative and functional options in three categories: Ceramics, Bed and Bath. Known primarily for his cutting-edge yet contemporary design sensibilities, Abloh brings a unique freshness to this introductory diversification into the living sphere.

The Ceramics line, for instance, presents a distinctively elegant character, highlighted by the fact that it is made of ivory-hued porcelain, with a delicate cornflower-blue grass print that appears discretely across the surface. This range currently includes complete breakfast and lunch sets, coffee mugs, soap trays and ashtrays.

Meanwhile, Abloh’s vision for showcasing the contrasting magic between black and white, along with all the blurred grey areas of life, the Bed collection offers a soft white double bed set, with a subtle imprint of the label’s famous black arrow monogram. An orange tassel-knit throw, embroidered with the arrow logo in an impactful deeper shade is also available from this line.

And last, but definitely not the least, the Bath selection comprises an ivory-white towel set and bathrobe, all featuring a stylish rendering of the brand’s monogram that has vine leaves weaving in and around it.

The HOME collection, which is currently only available at the Off-White™ store in Mykonos in Greece, is priced from HK$745 to HK$5,000 (approximately). It will, however, be up for grabs through online retailers and at the Empty Gallery in Hong Kong from 1 September onwards. So what can we say... watch this (HOME) space!

Farfetch Drops HK$5.3 Billion to Acquire Off-White Parent Company New Guards Group

Luxury online retailer Farfetch has just acquired New Guards Group (NGG) – the Italian contemporary fashion company for HK$5.3 billion (US$675 million).

The fashion deal intends to add a “brand platform” layer to the company and build a “brand of the future” while “expanding its capabilities to now include design, production and brand development” explains a spokesperson for Farfetch. By acquiring NGG, Farfetch will be able to provide the opportunity to develop and introduce new labels and exclusive capsule collections with its existing portfolio including Off-White, Marcelo Burlon: County of Milan, Palm Angels, Ben Taverniti, Unravel Project, Heron Preston, Alanui and Kirin Peggy Guo.

[inline-quote author="José Neves, founder of luxury online retailer Farfetch"]"The addition of New Guards’ brand platform brings a creative and industrial dimension to our suite of capabilities which, combined with our community of more than 650 boutiques, enables us to power and promote both new and existing creative names in the luxury industry to build the brands of the future. "[/inline-quote]

Shortly after the news of the acquisition, founder of streetwear brand Off-White and artistic director of Louis Vuitton Virgil Abloh made a statement to clarify the effects of the deal to his brand. “Off-White would like to clarify our ownership structure. Off-White LLC, which is controlled by Virgil Abloh, owns the trademark of our brand, and NGG is our exclusive licensee pursuant to a multiyear agreement. The New Guards Group transaction with Farfetch will not affect Off-Whit’s day-to-day operations as the New Guards Group team will become part of Farfetch. We look forward to our ongoing work together,” explains Abloh.

But since the change of ownership, it has been reported that the Farfetch stock has nosedived 45 percent at US$10.09 after the news broke out, including the announcing of chief operating officer Andrew Robb leaving the company. Farfetch founder José Neves has already suffered a loss since acquiring Stadium Goods, but is hopeful that purchasing these two companies will reclaim their company value as it is currently far from profitable.

Play video game inspired by Virgil Abloh’s work on Louis Vuitton’s website

Louis Vuitton video game

Louis Vuitton's March runway show was set in an imaginary New York street, the same universe found in the retro-inspired video game now posted on the brand's website.

The game features a figure running past brick walls and storefronts, avoiding obstacles such as garbage cans, construction zones, and telephone booths. Players can collect Louis Vuitton logos to increase their score.

The video game arrives a few days after the 12 July opening of Louis Vuitton's pop-up boutique in southern Manhattan. The Men's Autumn/Winter 2019 collection was originally met with outcry as it contained many references to Michael Jackson following renewed allegations of child sexual abuse in a shocking documentary that aired earlier this year. In response to the criticism, Louis Vuitton chose to remove all references to him from their line.
