These 8 Beauty Products Get a Makeover for Chinese New Year
A new decade, a new cycle of the Chinese zodiac – and with that a whole new outlook on beauty. In celebration of the jubilant festival, beauty brands worldwide have redressed their most covetable products in red, gold and influences of the rat to ring in the Chinese New Year. In other words, it's the same potent formulas that we’ve grown to adore, but now repackaged in a limited-edition version to fall in love with for the first time, and all over again.
shu uemura
shu uemura gets festive by repackaging some of their hero products in flaming red. The limited edition collection includes its Rouge Unlimited lipsticks (HK$230), Hard Formula brow pencils (HK$200) and our favourite Ultime8 Sublime Cleansing Oil (HK$870/340ml).
SK-II
[caption id="attachment_183287" align="alignnone" width="1340"] SK-II Facial Treatment Essence[/caption]
Though the formula has stayed the same for 39 years, SK-II’s Pitera Essence (HK$1,574/230ml) will see some change in its look to commemorate the holidays. Pop icon Mickey Mouse (performing the signature pat-pat application method) graces the facial treatment bottle to welcome the year of the rat, or should I say mouse.
Shiseido
[caption id="attachment_183292" align="alignnone" width="2000"] Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate[/caption]
The Ultimune (HK$1,050) bottle is a bit of a chameleon. Its unique shape has been the canvas for several designs. Quite naturally, we were expecting yet another fantastic artist collaboration for Chinese New Year, and here we have it – artist Hideki Inaba’s floral illustration in warm tones of reds, pinks, and gold.
NARS
[caption id="attachment_183290" align="alignnone" width="1280"] NARS Chinese New Year Limited Edition Collection[/caption]
A few of NARS’ cult classics are dressed in chromatic red with gold brushstrokes -- the Light Reflecting Setting Powder (HK$370), Aqua Glow and Natural Radiant Cushion Compact (HK$410 for case and refill), Quad Eyeshadow Palette (HK$440) and the Afterglow Lip Balm (HK$250) to be exact.
Lancôme
[caption id="attachment_183288" align="alignnone" width="853"] Lancôme Advanced Génefique Youth Activating Concentrate[/caption]
While the Advanced Génefique series isn’t getting a face lift for the first time, it is doing more than it did before. Following the 2019 success, the well-known and well-loved eye serum (HK$645/20ml), eye cream (HK$520/15ml) and anti-aging serum (HK$1,555/100ml) are back in shiny red bottles this year, with the latter engraved with “2020” in the style of fireworks, held in a fitted case.
L’Occitane
[caption id="attachment_183296" align="alignnone" width="853"] L'Occitane Immortelle Overnight Reset Oil-in-Serum[/caption]
The Overnight Immortelle Reset Oil-in-Serum (HK$750/50ml) was first introduced in late 2018 and has been recognised not only for its wondrous effects, but by its ombre violet and golden bottle. For the new year, it adopts a new colourway of red and golden hues, topped with a gold chrome cap.
Kiehl’s
[gallery ids="183282,183284,183285"]
For the second year in a row now, Kiehl’s has commissioned artist Eirian Champan to illustrate the holidays on their products, including the Ultra Facial Cream (HK$530/125ml), Calendula Toner (HK$315/250ml) and Creamy Avocado Eye Treatment (HK$280/14ml). The whimsical work pays tribute to the zodiac with the special help of his character, Rock-It the Rat.
Charlotte Tilbury
Fashion backstage skincare hero, the Magic Cream (HK$750/50ml), gets a holiday makeover. The Magic Cream remains in its luxurious clear jar, while the rose-gold lid is replaced with a festive red one and gold-tone logo. It was comes in an auspicious red giftbox, too.

New In: The 7 Beauty Products to Start 2020 With
Reevaluations and resolutions – the new year comes with a bit (or a lot of) reflection. And while most promises will fall through before February, there are a few fun things that are both good for you and will keep you excited beyond the first month of the year. Plus, if you're looking to switch up a couple of things in your life, this is the perfect time to refresh your regimen. Whether you’re looking to cultivate a more sustainable approach, treat your skin to something slightly more indulgent or searching for a new scent, here are the most anticipated beauty drops this January that will get you through the season, and year.
Chanel Chance Perfume Pencils
Launch: 1 January
Price: HK$835
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/3_CHANCE_Packshot_CHANCE-Crayon_Easy-Resize.com_.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/2_CHANCE_Packshot_CHANCE-Crayon_Easy-Resize.com_.jpg" right-caption="" left-caption=""]
Chanel No. 5 is probably one of the most sensational perfumes since its launch in 1921. And if not that, then it’s definitely the world’s best-selling fragrance (it’s said that a bottle is sold around the world every 30 seconds). And though classics will always have a place in our hearts, in recent years, we’ve had our eyes (and nose) on something a little more fresh, fruity and floral. The four Chances – the original Chance and its three interpretations, Eau Tendre, Chance Eau Fraîche and Chance Eau Vive – may not be new, but the crayon format is. Sold as a set of four, the solid fragrance is travel-friendly and can easily be applied to pulse points for all day wearability.
Dior Prestige Le Micro-Caviar de Rose
Launch: 1 January
Price: HK$2,800/75ml
Growing outside Christian Dior’s childhood home were wild clifftop roses that defied its harsh climate and environment. The resilient rose led to the creation of the first rose created for cosmetics – the Rose de Granville. From 7 rounds of cross-breeding chosen among over 40,000 hybrids, the result is a unique flower with the most extraordinary molecular profile of any rose. Dior Science has taken this nutrient-heavy bloom to create its newest reparative skincare, Le Micro-Caviar de Rose. Each jar holds 17,000 melting micro pearls which diffuse their micro-nutrients into the skin to comfort, repair, restore and revitalise signs of fatigue.
Drunk Elephant F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial
Launch: 1 January
Price: HK$410/50ml
Since the arrival of Sephora, beauty hoarders have now got another channel to fuel their addiction. With the new stores come new brands, one of which has climbed to cult standing: Drunk Elephant, the fastest-growing skincare brand in Sephora’s history. So when we were told that Founder Tiffany Masterson had a new product up her sleeve launching in 2020, we took it upon ourselves to see if it lived up to the reputation of the rest of the line. The F-Balm is a cooling, quenching overnight mask is said to plump and restore with its electrolyte cocktail. The formula effectively rehydrates hungover, overly-parched skin with its niacinamide, plant squalene, omega fatty acids and antioxidants. The verdict: it’s as promising as it sounds.
Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Primer
Launch: 1 January
Price: HK$390/30ml
[dual-images right-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/LM_Pure-Canvas-Primer-Illunminating_HK390_30ml_Visual_with-ingredients_pearl.jpg" left-image-url="https://www.prestigeonline.com/hk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/LM_Pure-Canvas-Primer-Protecting_HK390_30ml_Visual_with-ingredients_Suncreen.jpg" right-caption="Pure Canvas Primer Illuminating" left-caption="Pure Canvas Primer Protecting"]
Considered the pioneer of makeup primer, Laura Mercier first introduced this category, previously unheard of outside of theatrical makeup, back in 1996. Fast forward to 2020, and this tiny tube has become what is integral in everyday cosmetic application. Twenty-four years later, Laure Mercier is growing its collection, with revamped packaging for its original bestseller and four new products in the Canvas Primer Collection. All formulas boost priming effects, extend makeup wear and protect against aggressors, all the while allowing your skin to breathe. Each of the new formulas address a specific skin concern, be it blurring, hydrating, illuminating or protecting. The Pure Canvas Primer Illuminating wins top marks with its “glow from within” effect, formulated with micronised pearls, glycerin and porcelain flower extract, to enhance the skin’s natural luminosity.
Clé de Peau Beauté La Crème
Launch: 2 January
Price: HK$4,600/30ml; HK$6,000/50ml
Since its launch in 1982, the acclaimed La Crème has undergone eight transformations thanks to Clé de Peau’s scientific developments and breakthroughs. The latest formula is its most potent and advanced yet, maximising Skin Intelligence – which activates the properties to enable skin to repair and defend itself from external stressors. The studies have also shown that 100% of women who have tried it swear by the results (-- us included). What’s more, the new multifaceted gemstone-like packaging sits beautifully on the bathroom shelf.
Byredo Unnamed
Launch: 16 January
Price: HK$1,850/100ml
The Swedish perfumers Byredo has been bottling up scents translated from memories and emotions since 2006. This year, they’re bringing back their ever-popular limited edition Unnamed fragrance. It literally has no name and no direction, just an immaculate label with the promise of a story to write as your own. The reedition is composed of gin accord and pink pepper top notes, a lush violet and orris stem heart and fir balsam and tree moss as a base. Create your own associations – be it a name, a date, a special moment, a dream destination – you can customise your own fragrance name using the iconic Byredo typography in black and the new fluorescent blue, green and pink colours, too.
Fenty Beauty Snap Shadows
Launch: 16 January
Price: HK$208; HK$375 for 2
There’s always that shade or two in an eyeshadow palette that remains untouched. It’s true, no one uses every colour no matter what mood or occasion it may be. So, Rihanna decided to roll out mini palettes of only six shades packed with rich, smooth, blendable colours in matte, shimmer and glitter finishes, suited for any skin tone – a collection that she promises you will use. “All the shades you like and none you don’t. That’s the beauty of Snap Shadows – you can mix & match these palettes to vibe with you” says @badgirlriri. How you ask? Each pocket-sized palette can snap onto another (hence the name of the product) to create a handy compact-sized custom palette.

Why Good Bacteria is the Best Thing for Your Skin
The growing concern and obsession with wellness has mutated from what was once a craze to what is now a lifestyle. From shooting vitamins into our veins by means of plant-based/alternative-meat diets, vitamin supplements, green and clean beauty to balancing our gut health – the unstoppable wellness train has done us good. But the new word around town is probiotics, or good bacteria, which don’t just manage the health of our digestive system, but when misted over our faces, improves our skin.
The same way that we wrapped our heads around good bacteria in our gut, covering our bodies and faces with it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. The science has been around, and have gained popularity in the US and Europe, so it was just a matter of time before it hit our shores in Hong Kong. As news travels fast, so does product. AO+ Skincare, the exact formula behind its overseas counterpart (Mother Dirt) from the States, has gained holy grail status in the West and has now arrived in Hong Kong. AO+ is the first biome-friendly skincare brand available on this side of the world, and with it comes its promise for a balanced microbiome for healthy confident skin.
Why do we need AO+?
Taking it way back to when humans first walked the earth, our bodies were designed to fend off germs (and other cavemen monstrosities) on its own. Not to say that we aren’t capable of doing so today, but over generations, we’ve become a little “too clean” with our daily dependence on soaps and deodorants, which has eventually begun to disrupt our microbiome -- the skin’s ecosystem -- by stripping off our own good bacteria (Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria AKA AOB).
How does AO+ work?
The natural ingredients of AO+ Vitality Microbalance Mist (HK$500) including the core component, AOB, contribute to its efficacy. The main role of this patented live good bacteria acts as the skin’s “peacekeeper” to protect and balance our skin’s pH and natural biome without harming our ecosystem, thanks to its raw ingredients in its formulation. That means it restores our balance by promoting healthy skin and combating the damage caused by pollution and helps soothe problematic skin (conditions like eczema, redness, acne, allergies and sensitive skin). AOB breaks down irritants like sweat into healthy byproducts that feeds our skin – yum. So to make the most out of your bacteria, spraying pre and post workout maximises the benefits of AOB.
But I love my existing skincare!
Yes, we all do. That nice-smelling, feel-good stuff we slather ourselves with. Ideally, you don’t need more than biome-friendly products in our system. But that doesn’t mean that integrating AOB into our routine wipes our favourite bottles off our shelves. Compatible with all products (but recommended with the use of organic formulas), AO+ Vitality Microbalance Mist acts as a guard, breaking down all the bad bacteria that comes in contact with our skin. Following our serums, creams, makeup and more, spritz generously all over and you’re set.
So, who is this product suitable for?
Simply put, everyone and every skin type. The AO+ Vitality Microbalance Mist is preservative-free, fragrance-free and 100% natural and jam packed full of good bacteria. In fact, it is so gentle that expecting moms and even infants can benefit from it, too.
Results
It's clinically proven that you’ll see and feel them in 7 to 14 days -- reduced pores, balanced tone, radiance, and softer skin. Everything that embodies healthy skin, really.
Is that all?
Not quite. In addition to AO+ Vitality Microbalance Mist, three other complementary products are available: Soothing Microbalance Cleansing Mask (HK$260), Hydrating Microbalance Body Foam (HK$120) and Microbalance Scalp Protection Shampoo (HK$120). Formulated to maintain the skin’s balance as well, the rest of the range works together to enhance the good bacteria in the AO+ Vitality Microbalance Mist.

La Vie en Rose: The Secret Behind Dior’s Prestige La Crème
It’s no surprise that when it comes to skincare, roses have been caught on as a luxury ingredient to provide the skin with high levels of antioxidants, moisture and resistance to combat inflammation.
For 18 years, Dior Science has been exploring the area of inflamm’aging, an ensemble of micro-inflammations produced by cells when the skin needs to defend itself against daily stressors. Submitted to this silent, permanent and insidious inflammation, the skin is affected from the epidermis, to the heart of the dermis. Cellular renewal slows down, wrinkles and pigmentation spots appear – all the signs of aging are amplified.
Introducing the star ingredient of Dior’s Prestige La Crème: Rose de Granville, a mythical wild flower that was discovered on the cliffs of Normandy. Test protocols suggested that the Rose de Granville demonstrated a capacity of resistance greatly superior to that of a classical rose. Watch the video below to understand the power of such Dior Prestige myth.
Cultivated in a dedicated Dior Garden in France, the Rose de Granville grows in an open field without fertiliser, pesticides or herbicides.
At the heart of Prestige skincare, Rose de Granville is the secret to its inflamm’aging formulas. Today, Dior Science has gone one step further and made a new breakthrough. Infused in Dior Prestige La Crème, the Rose de Granville extract inhibits the Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF), a look-out for inflammation, by 50%, helping cells to increase resistance and fight the effects of micro-inflammations.
Want to maximise the effects? Prep the skin with La Micro-Huile de Rose enriched with more than 20 micronuritrients essentials from Rose de Granville prior to applying the La Crème with the Cryo-Modeling Duo applicators to boost sensoriality through massaging and contouring.

Kiss From A Rose: The Benefits of the Powerful Beauty Ingredient
Long associated with religion, nobility and -- of course -- romance, roses have also been used in Chinese and other herbal forms of medicine, as a vitamin supplement and even as a natural sweetener. But perhaps nowhere has the flower caught on more as a luxury ingredient than in skincare and cosmetics.
Rose and rosehip oils, and the various tinctures made from them, have been proven to heal and moisturise the skin, reduce redness, combat inflammation and provide high levels of antioxidants. All of which makes them a perfect addition to everything from toners to face masks to lip treatments.
Several brands have gone a step further and created entire collections based on the benefits of rose. Chantecaille, which uses extracts of the rare Rose de Mai to create its Pure Rosewater face mist, has made rosewater the basis of all of its skincare products. Sisley has built a cult following for its Black Rose line comprising a mask, oil and cream infused with softening and anti-ageing extracts of the black rose as well as Bulgarian rose.
Likewise, Fresh uses real rose petals for its collection of rose-powered toners, serums, masks and moisturisers. Dior has created its “first micro-nutritive fluid skincare foundation” enriched with extracts from the wild Rose de Granville, and Lancôme has added rose oil to its new L’Absolu Mademoiselle Shine lipstick for hydration and effortless application.
“We call it ‘nature’s wonder’,” says Fresh founders Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg. “The flower yields a precious oil that is known to hydrate, soothe and tone the skin, and the scent adds a unique mood-enhancing quality to the experience of using it.”

8 Gentle Skincare Soothers for Sensitive Skin
It’s all fun and games when we try out new skincare and beauty products... until something goes wrong. And despite how much you love the way something feels or smells, there is no one-size-fits-all item, formula, or routine, out there. However, it will come as a relief to your sanity, and your skin, that a holy grail does exist for every skin type. No matter how sensitive.
Whether you’ve tried a product that wasn’t quite suited for your skin concerns or you’ve just landed from a long-haul flight, or you’re going through those few days of the month when you’re especially susceptible to shit that goes on – you have your delicate moments.
We’ve handled with extra care when trying out products with the sensitivity claim (so you won’t have to), to come up with a list of eight skin-safe formulas promising zero irritation, breakouts, dryness and inflammation.
1. Aesop: Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator
[caption id="attachment_171524" align="alignnone" width="3746"] Aesop Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator (HK$415)[/caption]
The latest addition to the Australian brand’s skincare range is Aesop’s first hydrator specifically designed to soothe, calm and bring comfort to sensitive skin. Thanks to antioxidant actives like ginger root which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent; Bisabolol (an ingredient extracted from chamomile) which promotes the skin’s own healing process; and squalene which helps to condition the skin and replenishes our moisture barrier to make sure all the goodness is locked in. The woody, herbaceous fragrance is the final cherry on top.
How to use: apply morning and evening after cleansing and toning. Gently massage into the face and neck.
2. Derm Institute: Anti-Oxidant Hydration Serum
[caption id="attachment_172506" align="alignnone" width="800"] Derm Institute Anti-Oxidant Hydration Serum (HK$1,000)[/caption]
Medical skincare experts, Derm Institute introduces its new and improved Anti-oxidant Hydration Serum. The reinvented formula delivers even higher efficacy than proven previously with an infusion of seven powerful natural antioxidants (including Malpighia fruit, white tea, grape seed) to repair and protect, and nano-gold for a surge of intense hydration, the advanced formula nourishes the skin by replacing lost moisture and collagen depletion. Its Super Hydration Complex (hyaluronic acid and ceramide complex) retains 1,000 times its weight in water acting like a moisture magnet so skin is plumped, smoothed and radiant.
How to use: apply after toner and follow with lotion or cream for complete hydration.
* Derm Institute’s new Anti-oxidant Hydration Serum will hit shelves in November, 2019
3. Dr. Barbara Sturm: Anti-Pollotion Drops
[caption id="attachment_171529" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics Anti-Pollution Drops (HK$990)[/caption]
It’s been a while since we’ve been blessed with German skincare scientist Dr. Barbara Sturm’s magic without trekking all the way to her spas in New York and Dusseldorf. While we get familiar with Molecular Cosmetics – her skincare line that has quickly gained a top shelf status, we stumbled upon her Anti-pollution drops. Two to three drops of this serum does the magic – protecting and promoting the skin barrier, combating the oxidation caused by pollutants and harmful UV, and shielding your skin from external stressors. The marine microbe extracts are responsible for neutralising airborne heavy metals while cocoa seed extracts fight against signs of digital ageing caused by blue light from our electronics – and we know all too well that there’s no exception and we’re all guilty of that.
How to use: dispense a full pipette in the palm of your hand and apply to face, eye and neck area using a gentle patting motion after cleansing.
4. First Aid Beauty: Ultra Repair BarriAir Cream
[caption id="attachment_171530" align="alignnone" width="1200"] First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair BarriAir Cream (HK$275)[/caption]
The best offence is a good defence, and as the brand and product name suggests, this good-for-all hydrating soufflé-textured cream helps to strengthen the skin’s protective outer layer when it has been compromised by harsh products and the environment. The lipids within bio-mimic the natural composition of the skin to help fortify and resume its healthy state. This airy cream is packed with hyaluronic acid to help stimulate and replenish moisture, colloidal oatmeal and antioxidant-rich vitamin E to calm, soothe and condition, and ceramides to strengthen the skin’s barrier.
How to use: apply daily in the AM and PM, and evenly over a clean face or following a serum.
5. Helena Rubinstein: Hero Re-PLASTY Age Recovery Night Cream
[caption id="attachment_171535" align="alignnone" width="1575"] Helena Rubinstein Hero Re-PLASTY Age Recovery Night Cream (HK$3,300)[/caption]
Known as the Black Bandage, Helena Rubinstein’s new evening skincare envelops damaged or concerned skin to help accelerate its recovery. Using medical technology to fuse together hyaluronic acid for hydration and glycyrrhizic acid with anti-inflammatory properties, reducing flaking and restoring suppleness to bring the repairing qualities of a band-aid. The derm-active blend is cold-pressed and Pro-Xylane is added to create that signature velvety yet featherlike bandage texture. The night cream is especially effective when worn overnight as the skin cells are regenerating, so you can wake up with nourished skin.
How to use: apply every evening to perfectly cleansed skin. Apply over the face avoiding the eye contour.
6. Omorovicza: Cashmere Cleanser
[caption id="attachment_171537" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Omorovicza Cashmere Cleanser (HK$500)[/caption]
Cleansing is the most crucial part of your routine (and if it’s not, it should be!). But nothing will leave you more paralysed with fear than stripping away all the good along with the bad when it comes to washing your face – and this is especially true for sensitive skin. The search for a powerful yet gentle cleanser probably ends with Omorovicza. Formulated for ultra-sensitive skin, this cleansing milk contains calendula extract with anti-inflammatory properties, apricot kernel oil rich in vitamin A and E to promote collagen production, shea butter to boost lipids. Say goodbye to daily grime and hello to your wonderfully clean and balanced fresh face.
How to use: apply daily to damp skin. Massage well, then rinse thoroughly.
7. RéVive: Masque de Glaise
[caption id="attachment_171539" align="alignnone" width="600"] RéVive Masque de Glaise (HK$1,100)[/caption]
You’ll know all too well that clay masks are a no-no for temperamental skin. Though it can be clarifying, it is extremely drying. But before the thought sends you running in the opposite direction, take our word that this one’s a keeper. The delicate formula is said to clear impurities, tighten, lift, and to our surprise, hydrates. After letting it settle and harden on your face, the mask hardens and once washed off, the lines on your face are ironed out and instead of that tight dryness you’d normally feel after a mask, you’re left with radiant and supple skin. At the end of the day, because it is purifying, don’t overdo the frequency of use and follow up with other hydrating products every time to maintain that supple plump.
How to use: Apply once to twice weekly. Put on liberally (at least 1/8 inch layer on cleanser skin) and leave for 15 to 20 minutes until mask hardens. Rinse well. Follow with serum and moisturiser.

There’s obvious credibility when you know something has a history that goes back two centuries. Taking beauty secrets from rediscovered Japanese manuscripts, Tatcha has built a strong cult following for its ancient recipes for the modern world. Designed especially for sensitive skin is the Eastern beauty brand’s Indigo cream, which promises that it’s so gentle that it can offer relief to even conditions like eczema, dermatitis, rosacea and allergies. The velvety texture is luxuriously cushiony, providing instant relief and comfort to the skin. Its natural Japanese Indigo extract calms and soothes irritated skin; Colloidal Oatmeal relieves itching, subdues redness and seals in moisture; while Sophora Japonica (extract from white flowers) pumps the skin with moisture.
How to use: massage a pearl-sized amount gently onto face, neck and décolletage in upwards strokes. Use daily, morning and night.
