On February 11^th, New York fashion week returned and blessed us all with the latest collections of the city’s veterans, some fresh faces and enticing guest appearances. 

Here is our picks of the most memorable shows from the day 1 of New York Fashion Week:

Proenza Schouler

Proenza Schouler presentation was, by far, the most anticipated one during the first day of New York fashion week. Designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez reappraised their beloved corseted silhouettes in a context more relaxed (as contradictory as it sounds). The collection was an interpretation of the pandemic-induced ‘comfort and ease’ style canons, as seen from relaxed yet perfectly constructed tailoring and full tulip skirts. McCollough and Hernandez made their stance on sneakers this season clear by deliberately rejecting the staple and, tastefully, replacing it with boxer shoes and precisely-cut leather ballet flats. 

Christian Cowan

Christian Cowan’s ambition to create ‘the highest high-fashion show ever’ paid off – partially due to the presentation taking place at the One World Observatory, overviewing Hudson river, but – mostly – due to the collection itself that could be aptly described as joyfully glamorous. Cowen-beloved sequins and feathers appeared throughout the collection: on the trims of the black blazer dress, gowns, skirts and a bishop blouse even. The feeling of the presentation felt like that point when a gala turns into a party – it profoundly captured the moment where the anticipation of a highbrow bacchanalia reaches its apex, merely seconds before the ball drops. 

Libertine

Surrealism seems to be the buzzword of the season. Libertine embraces the movement and intertwines it with 18th-century and punk references. Most of the prints were designed in-house, with some of them pulled from the archives of the brand’s first show in 2003. Eye and floral motifs rode alongside occasional solid colours – a direction meant to convey – simply – joy. Creative director Johnson Hartig also introduced a range of silk-printed headgear, from bucket hats to tricorns. 

A.Potts

In its Autumn 2022 collection, A.Potts offers its reappraisal of the casual wardrobe. The gender-neutral label leaned into experimentation with its use of boiled wool, velvet and bizarre forms like tentacles attached to the backs of some outfits. Aaron Potts, the brand’s founder, introduced a pleasing palette ranging from blush pinks and oranges to blacks – mostly monochromatic, with occasional animal and abstract prints. The patent leather looks stole the show; Potts managed to construct flattering silhouettes with ruched dresses, bulky coats and capes, attesting to the designer’s ambition to ‘tear down boundaries’.

Our Picks: Lunar New Year Gifts we Love

Prada

With its Action in the Year of Tiger campaign, Prada aims to bring awareness to the endangerment of the Amur tiger. Prada will donate part of the proceeds to the Walking with Tiger and Leopard Programme of China Green Foundation. The capsule features familiar streetwear staples reimagined to reflect the spirits of the Lunar New Year. The emblematic Cleo bag boasts a fluffy upgrade, while the leggings and tracksuits boast vibrant accents.  

Michael Kors

Michael Kors is no stranger to high-octane glamour, as most recently testified by its Lunar New Year campaign. This time, the House developed an exclusive backdrop in collaboration with Chinese illustrator Ji WeiRan. The heels from the collection embody the feline prowess of this year’s animal with their sequin-embellished MK motifs and pungent colours. 

Mugler

The Year of the Tiger is the perfect excuse to embrace sensuality. In fashion, no one does it quite like Mugler. With the delicate cut-out at the neck, this statement dress carves out an alluring silhouette, and, through the gathered execution of the fabric, it embraces tastefully erotic theatrics that promise to make any entrance an unforgettable one. 

Messika

Messika launched four exclusive pieces to celebrate the Year of the Tiger – two red strig bracelets, a signet ring and a pendant. Each accessory utilises the House’s emblematic dynamic charms encrusted with diamonds. Modern, timeless, with a nod to heritage – these creations, although created to celebrate the Lunar New Year festivities, will illuminate any jewellery collection for seasons to come. 

Roger Vivier

Glamour with a subtle ferocious tint is where Roger Vivier reigns supreme. The emblematic clasp of this bag features emerald and marquise-cut strass and, only fitting for the festive season, a striking crimson façade. 

Christopher Kane

Christopher Kane has long-convinced fashion aficionados everywhere of its mastery in detailing and, especially, embellishments. The British brand looks at something as simple as a cardigan through a glamorous prism by introducing symmetric cut-outs and crystal fringe to its hems. Updated with a red colour and utilising the practical, relaxed silhouette, this piece is a fine example of sophistication and utility existing in harmony.  

Fendi

Although Fendi’s interpretation of the Year of the Tiger is quite literal, it – still – creates magnetic results. The bold tiger stripe motifs that decorate hoodies, T-shirts and bags match perfectly with the understated Fendirama monogram. The collection includes cosy knitwear, tailoring staples, handbags and jewellery – a whole wardrobe that begs to be explored and worn throughout the festive season. 

Proenza Schouler

The further we, as a society, as a collective, move away from Christmas, the more sophisticated the sweaters get. Effortless elegance is distilled in this Proenza Schouler number in the form of psychedelic stripes. Cut in a slouchy silhouette with a tasteful turtleneck, this piece will take you from cosying up at home to conquering the concrete jungle.  

St. John

This Lunar New Year, St. John pays homage to its knitwear roots and reimagines its heritage with a festive touch. This tweed dress is a tasteful interpretation of the beloved classics, presented – naturally – in red and gold, with buttons in the shape of knots and a mini silhouette that carves a flattering frame – ideal for seasonal festivities.

VALENTINO

Leave it to Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli to redefine the coveted 60s silhouette through a contemporary lens. The effortless fluidity of this dress is accentuated with feather trims at the hem and cuffs, while its unapologetic playfulness is brought by an elaborate floral print.

Welcome back, New York Fashion Week!

We were all kind, all optimistic and all armoured with very nice words about the virtual reality existence that fashion brands and their shows have surrendered to in the past year-or-so. The excitement and sweet, sweet sincerity about the return of runways; the return of a real-life audience; the return of after-parties, however, make it quite clear: there's nothing like a show experienced in real-time, in-person. The runway looks certainly did not disappoint in the few days counting down to the also-revived Met Gala — it was the bold, the brash and the beatific that led the way. Understandably. For the joy — the fun! — in clothes; in the institution, the designers, the people that keep this industry alive.

Below, just a handful of trends we saw, loved and can't wait to wear.

Trend #1: Hey, Your Bra's Showing

Call it merely an evolution of the Gen Z-staple cropped top, or call it a sartorial repercussion derived from our inability to extract limbs from the things we choose to wear (or not wear) as we amble around the house. Whatever you wish, underwear as outerwear — be it a bralette-adjacent top or corset-inspired tank complete with strips of boning anchored from ribcage to hipbone — was a ubiquitous sight across Spring/Summer 2022 shows, from Michael Kors’ opening look à la a red-lipped Kendall Jenner, to the triangle variations tucked beneath dopamine-bright cardigans at Coach.

Trend #2: Wallflowers Need Not Apply

There’s a healthy modicum of responsibility that comes with making entrances in full-body paillettes worn like an armour; like sheaths of chainmail donned pre-battle. The kind plated and sparkling at TOM FORD, encasing neither bodycon nor the genre of gowns you’d expect drifting along a long stretch of scarlet-red carpet. Instead, they’re embellishing everyday silhouettes. The tank top. The ribbed-knit. The basics rendered very much not so this season. On the topic of OTT designs, there were, too, an abundance of feathers at Prabal Gurung; top-to-toe satin at Christian Siriano; very fringed separates at Proenza Schouler. A season of fashion that’s all joy, all deep breaths and all — damn it, look at me.

Trend #3: Strapped In

The area extending from the crown of your head to your décolletage? Prime real estate. It's the space with the most screen time on FaceTime. On Zoom. On whatever chat applications you use to maintain some sort of truncated connection with long-distance friends, lovers and relatives. To keep those fair few inches interesting, Jonathan Simkhai makes a case for a very strappy yoke. Eckhaus Latta headlined with strips of the ribbed-knit fabric anchored at the armscye, tumbling past the upper arms. Maryam Nassir Zadeh, too, with spaghetti string-ties all asymmetric; then, layered; then, knotted and tethered across the shoulders like webbing.

Trend #4: Crafty

While you were collecting supplies for tie-dye, beaded necklaces and knitting and embroidery and crochet last summer, you’d be remiss not to imagine your favourite designers with the same knee-jerk inclination. Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler made way for Kauai, for example, and sent their swishy, fringed designs down the runway with handmade leis from Maui. Joseph Altuzarra celebrated his NYC homecoming with shibori-dyed separates on a runway opened by none other than new-mother Gigi Hadid. Gabriela Hearst, always a proponent for craft, started her show with knit maxis embellished at the hips and ribcage with woven inserts handmade in collaboration with Naiomi Glasses and TahNibaa Naataanii of the Navajo Nation.

Trend #5: A Cold Summer

There's something to be said about transseasonal collections, with designs named for Spring/Summer sauntering down runways cosy in knits; in big coats; in anoraks; in shearling; in tartan check and brushed surfaces and houndstooth prints perhaps much more familiar emblazoned across collections another season away. Most patent was Coach's homage to Bonnie Cashin, a titan that made the brand a household name upon her helm, and someone superlatively described as a designer that "cut some of the best outerwear American fashion has ever seen." We're all going to need coats in a couple of months anyway. Or, on vacation — fingers crossed.

Proenza Schouler has joined forces with Birkenstock to create a bevy of unisex sandals featuring its classic Arizona and Milano iterations. The range offers a selection of six sandals arriving in a variety of stylish colourways. The collection shows how Proenza Schouler’s designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have successfully fused their unique New York aesthetic into the styles, while staying true to the cult German footwear company’s core values: quality and function.

The sandals feature hook and loop closures along with hardware buckles, and are equipped with industrial contrast topstitching for detailing. Sporting a chic colour palette of black, white, mustard ochre and metallic silver, the sandals are made out of polished, Specchio calf leather derived from past and present collections of the fashion label. The result of which is youthful and cool, taking your look from day to night with ease.

The Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock collection is now available exclusively at Net-a-Porter until 20 March for HK$2,599 - HK$2,835. Other select retailers around the world will see a release straight after the exclusive drop.

Oscar de la Renta Neon Lips

The beauty look on Oscar de la Renta’s runway can be summed up by vivid poppy lips. The fluorescent red/orange lips are bold and glossy. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux explains “I was trying to create a colour that – to my eyes – work on every girl and every skin tone. I also wanted something really powerful to fit everyone”.

Anna Sui Punk Rock Glam

Exaggerated metallic eye shadows ruled the Anna Sui runway with dramatic emeralds greens with dramatic lashes. For the lips, makeup artist Pat McGrath chose a deep eggplant to complete the look.

Chromat Graphic Eyeliner

As 2020 is the year of the Olympics, Chromat played on the theme using graphic bright neon winged eyeliner to mimic athletic sneaker stripes. To create the ultra bright look, two contrasting colours were used from corner to wing, then accentuated with a deep black wedge liner.
